I’m originally from Canada but visit Birmingham every summer to see family. For the past two years, during my stay, I’ve joined this gym for a month to stay consistent with my fitness routine.

This year, I was introduced to the gym by Carly, who was super friendly and helpful in getting me set up with a membership and giving me a tour of the facility.

If I’m back again next year, this will definitely be my go-to gym

Since this gym was taken over from Easy Gym, there’s been a great improvement. My fees clearly go towards a clean space with good well maintained equipment and decent, engaged staff. 10/10
Just as important is the overall atmosphere. Management is making a real effort to crack down on “mummy will clean up after me behaviour” – users who don’t treat other members with respect, by not returning equipment after use, get banned and the numbers are shown at the entrance. Brilliant idea.
Could crack down on users who share access numbers too.
There’s a real sense the Gym wants to do a great job. 10/10
Love Kings Heath!
We need businesses like you.

Unexpectedly stumbled across The Gym Group in Kings Heath while out shopping, and I’m really glad I did. The location is super convenient—right off the high street, with easy access and plenty of nearby stores and cafes. I decided to pop in and check it out and was genuinely impressed.

The gym is clean, modern, and spacious with a great layout that doesn’t feel overcrowded, even during peak hours. The range of equipment is excellent—from free weights to cardio machines, everything seemed well-maintained and up to date. The atmosphere is welcoming, and there’s no pressure, which is perfect if you’re just in for a quick session or not a regular gym-goer.

What stood out most was the flexibility of the membership options. Being able to get in a solid workout without long-term commitments is a big plus, especially when you’re on the move or only in the area for a short while. Staff were friendly, approachable, and more than happy to help with any questions.

Whether you’re local or just passing through, it’s a great spot to fit in a workout. Would definitely recommend checking it out

Treated very nicely by brother Faiz today. Been coming to this gym a couple years and loving it ✌

Not sure if on purpose but was no music on my visit today and it made the session feel so much better and and more relaxed. Everybody’s got headphones on anyways, plz consider skipping on the music

half the lockers at Perry Barr are permanently locked, loads of missing equipment especially on the cable machines (not a full set even if you bring all of them together), usually a mess after late night members don’t put stuff back. Easily the worst gym I have visited in the Gym Group. The Gym Group tens to be pretty good, so this one is unusual, but its been low quality for years. I have withdrawn membership now as they don’t listen to complaints. All attached photos were taken at 4:30am, with about 4 people in the gym.

I’ve been training here for the past more then 12 months, and this place is a game-changer. The equipment is top-notch — everything from free weights and squat racks to a wide range of machines is well-maintained and always available. The gym floor is spacious, clean, and never feels overcrowded, even during peak hours.

The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to help with form correction or workout tips. The trainers genuinely care about your progress and offer great advice tailored to your goals.

The atmosphere is motivating — you can tell everyone here is serious about their fitness but still respectful and encouraging to each other. The playlist is upbeat, the air conditioning is perfect, and the locker rooms are spotless with good showers.

Whether you’re lifting heavy, doing cardio, or just starting your fitness journey, this gym has everything you need. Easily the best investment I’ve made for my health this year!

A huge shoutout to my personal trainer, Zara Meade. She is not only an amazing trainer but also a truly wonderful person. Zara is incredibly motivating and always pushes me to be better, both mentally and physically. Her positive energy is contagious, and she genuinely cares about her clients’ progress and well-being. Had a previous day pass at the Pure Gym in Arcadia city centre, so I was sceptical of purchasing a day pass for The Gym Group. Honestly it is massive improvement.
There’s little to no mess on the floor. Any empty bottles people put them in the bins. Toilet and shower facilities are at least clean. There’s no overwhelming stench. Everything is spaced out and functional.

It does however have the commercial gym problem, which is people not returning weights and there’s plates and dumbbells scattered. Not as bad as other gyms but still. People enjoy ego lifting, but are too weak to actually return them.

Overall if I need to do a day pass again, I’m happy to use this gym.

Good gym……but there are few or no empty lockers available in men’s changing room.

Other members use these facilities as private lockers.

Sometimes there are about 50 ppl there but no free lockers available.

DL must pay attention to members needs and ensure the facilities are not misused.

If this carries on then I will not renew my membership.

I have been going to this gym a while now ,however I returned after 3 year absense and I thought they might have upgraded to the ladies gym at least. Yes all knew equipment has been replaced but one machine you left out , worn out ,rust on the weights, that is quite a put off. Although I will still be attending the gym, as its near to me and the rest are further apart. Also a kind request if a stairmaster machine be in the ladies area .

Grateful to have a ladies section but it’s absolutely tiny. Air conditioning hardly ever works in the ladies section. As well as that, the barely used sections like ‘the studio’ and the upper section for runners are MASSIVE in comparison. To top it off, the ladies section only get small 5kg plates as weights so anyone doing hip thrusts has the bar resting on their legs the whole time AND they have to put a ridiculous amount of plates on to get at a decent weight so I grab 8 of the 5kg ones (they state you can’t have weights over 10kg upstairs and that’s all well and good, but no one said you can’t have the larger 10kg plates up there)
Overall just very poor equipment, small environment and just not enough care put into it

Poor gym that has a bad vibe/poor atmosphere, plus it is sexist towards men, not to mention they don’t believe in equality.

Gym group makes a point in it’s policies about making everyone feel welcome/comfortable and it’s belief in equality, yet it’s massively hypocritical of them to have a women’s only area at this gym but no men’s only area, in order to bring equality to this gym and do what they make a point of preaching they either need to establish a men’s only area or remove the women’s only area, both would be restoring equality.

If they don’t do this then Digbeth gym and gym group (in this instance) will remain hypocrites, fortunately this is not my home gym or even a secondary gym, I only visited as Broad Street was closed, so I don’t plan on visiting ever again especially after been made to feel so uncomfortable, I didn’t even stay 15 minutes.

I am grateful my home gym and secondary gyms don’t demonstrate such hypocrisy, otherwise I’d most certainly cancel my membership.

I’ve been going to this gym for a year now and it’s easily one of the best in the area. The equipment is always clean and well-maintained, the atmosphere is welcoming, and there’s a great mix of people,

The only downside is that it can get a little busy during peak hours, but that’s just a sign of how popular and well-run the place is I suppose.

One staff member who really stands out is Suad Ismail She’s always friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful. Whether it’s offering advice on form or just greeting members with a smile, they go above and beyond to make everyone feel comfortable and motivated. Bad experience with this gym – the guy in the pic setting the plates while you re working out, at less than 30cm from you. Then acting like punks with his buddies around the gym. Other day I paid for a 24h pass then I couldn’t get out as it was past midnight – I had to use the emergency exit and they cancelled my account.

I’ve been coming here for 6 months now and believe it’s one of the best if not the best The Gym Groups in Birmingham. They have all the necessary machines, and still add more to make sure there is enough for everyone.

The benches are all clean and fresh, and the staff are friendly. Nae in particular is very helpful, and often present in the gym ready to lend assistance to anybody who requests.

There are sometimes challenges and sometimes freebies too (which helps a lot)

This is an idea location for a gym in Selly Oak, however it is quite small for a Gym Group for the population in the area so is very busy most of the time. Hence is only really enjoyable late at night or early in the morning.

The majority of the equipment works most of the time, and usually if one machine is broken there is another nearby. The equipment itself although slightly outdated consists of everything one would need for either cardio or strength training. Staff come to clean the equipment every night (I have been going 5-7 days a week to this gym for about 4 months now). Any broken equipment is soon fixed or replaced.

As a woman it is easy to feel intimidated by other people in the gym, especially men. Whilst in this gym I have experienced far less direct harassment than I have in other gyms, there is one other gym user in particular who is always staring at me (confirmed by peers as well) which does make me feel uncomfortable.

The best gym in Birmingham. Good stuff, quality equipment and clean environment. Fair price. I like most here the fact they allow you to use All The Gyms across the country. 10/10

I’m a 58 year old returning to training after a long absence. I am pleasantly surprised by how good this gym is.Yes it’s choc full of young uni students but everyone is so welcoming and helpful. The staff are more than happy to assist with a smile. It’s very clean and there always seems to be a cleaner on the go. The range and quality of equipment is very good and I’ve found good availability even at peak hours. There are no cleaning stations but nothing a personal sweat towel won’t fix.The area for stretching and mobility is very limited , a few cushioned mats near the door but it seems workable. Great value with ample free parking.

A very decent gym. I used to train at Bham Uni Gym, but their prices now are ludicrous (unless you’re middle class or a student). I joined the off peak (midnight until 3pm) and that suits me just fine. It’s a clean gym and can get busy but I’ve trained there 4 times already (since joining last week) and I’ve not had issues getting to use the equipment. Good gym crowd as well. Get your inner Arnie/Cory Everson (Google her) and join!

JD Gym is a fantastic place to work out – the equipment is modern, there’s plenty of space, and the atmosphere is always motivating. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the variety of machines and classes is excellent for all fitness levels.

The only thing I’d love to see improved is the cleanliness of the toilet area – if it could be cleaned a bit more frequently, it would make the overall experience even better.

Overall, highly recommend for anyone looking for a great-value, well-equipped gym!

What a fantastic place to be !!! A young lady, Miss Karina, the lovely staff member was there to welcome and showed me around with due care and sophisticated manner. Impressive, simply the best. It was my very first day and I thoroughly enjoyed my time. I started with Cardio and noticed everything is properly neat and clean. Thank you all at JD Gym. See u soon.

A great gym but they can improve with keeping the toilets open at night so gym users can use them. Great staff members that keep the gym as clean as possible however the toilets can be a mess most of the time they may need to hire another cleaner but I guess it is what it is, I’ve been to many 24hr gyms and I recommend JD Gyms rather then the other gyms. Everyone shows each other respect and people come to this gym from all over the place sometimes from different city’s! Got to be good if they come from so far!

This Gym is amazing! The price may be stunning at first but when you enter you understand the price is right! The staff are friendly and always hospitable in classes and generally around the gym. The best part of this gym is the Women’s section, absolutely fabulous, there is one section dedicated to cardio and abs with great machines and another section with a variety of free weights and machines! For shy women or just women looking for some privacy in a workout it is great, just to top it of you don’t even need to leave the changing room to get there! They made it as an extension of the room! definitely worth it

Attended today. Poor dated equipment. Remedial works taking place during the day. No showers working. Misleading signage stated showers closed due to deep clean, evidently not the case as workmen were in and out. Plumbers electricians.
Poor overall.

PureGym Birmingham Snow Hill appears to be facing some consistent issues. Reports suggest a lack of cleanliness is a recurring problem, with observations of untidy changing rooms and a general impression of poor maintenance affecting the overall workout experience. Equipment upkeep seems to be an area needing considerable attention to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all members.

Beyond the physical condition, staff responsiveness seems to be an area for improvement, with concerns raised regarding handling member inquiries and feedback. A more proactive approach to addressing these issues and fostering a sense of community could significantly enhance the value proposition for those seeking a dedicated fitness space.

No parking (nearest is £5/hr), the gym is overcrowded with not enough space or equipment, and the staff were rude when I raised concerns. Tried to get a refund but was refused. I cancelled and moved to a better gym — wouldn’t recommend this one.

I’ve been using this gym for a while, and unfortunately, it’s become clear that there are some serious issues that need to be addressed.

First of all, the showers are nearly unusable. The water is extremely hot, with no way to adjust the temperature. It was already too hot in the winter, and now in the summer, it’s even worse. After a workout in the heat, stepping into burning water is the last thing anyone wants.

But the problems go beyond just the showers. The gym overall feels dirty and poorly maintained. The bathroom is often messy and doesn’t seem to be cleaned regularly. There’s water on the floor, paper everywhere, and no one appears to be taking responsibility for it.

Some of the equipment is in terrible shape too. The mattresses are old and ripped , and the facility in general looks like it hasn’t been properly cared for in a long time. It really gives the impression that the place is being neglected.

This gym has potential, but right now, it’s not a place I feel comfortable using. I hope management starts taking cleanliness and maintenance more seriously for the safety and comfort of everyone.

Changing rooms were dirty with clumps of hair by the sinks. Rubbish scattered around the gym and equipment was all over the place. Not a fun workout.

I had a really disappointing experience today.
I was booked for a class and unfortunately ended up being the only one who showed up something that has happened to me before now and lesson carried on anyway . I’m new to gym and was looking forward to getting help with some weightlifting techniques.

However, the instructor today seemed completely uninterested. Right from the start, he kept suggesting I rebook the class simply because I was the only one there. Even after I explained what I wanted to focus on, he continued trying to talk me out of it instead of doing his job.

It was frustrating and discouraging. I eventually just gave up I wasn’t going to spend 30 minutes with someone who clearly didn’t want to be there or help me.

I hope the management takes this feedback seriously, especially for newcomers who are trying to build confidence and skills.

The P-H-O

The equipment here does not seem to be well maintained by the gym staff. The staff are also not visible on the gym floor and need to be patrolling to put equipment back where they should be.

And the order of some of the equipment does not make sense logically.

Could the fixed weight barbells be placed in the same section as the dumbells / benches? I had to walk to and from the other side of the room downstairs just to get and swap a 10kg barbell for a 15kg one and then for a 17.5kg one.

In every other gym I’ve been in, the fixed weight barbells are in the same section as the free weights and benches.

The leg press machine seat adjustment is impossible to do, I had to ask someone to move the pin for me because it seemed to be jammed or very stiff. Again this has never been an issue in the other gyms I’ve been to

The cable machines don’t have the straps/handle attachment which other gyms have as well. And on some of the cable machines I can’t even set the weight to 4kg (the lowest) because the black plastic cover on the cable machine gets in the way.

Overall it’s not a great first impression for the gym and I hope management will listen to these suggestions

Poor Maintenance and Hygiene Issues

Review:

I’ve been using PureGym from last two weeks and I’m disappointed with the poor maintenance of the facility. Most of the mats are torn or damaged, and the treadmills are extremely dirty. It seems like there isn’t regular or thorough cleaning, which is concerning given how many people use the equipment daily.

This lack of hygiene can lead to skin issues or infections, especially when people sweat and use the same unclean surfaces. For a gym that promotes health and fitness, proper cleanliness and equipment upkeep should be a priority.

I hope the management takes this feedback seriously and improves the cleanliness and maintenance standards.

I have been a membership at this Gym for the past 13 years, it has been a nice and lovely Gym, but the only problem is their staff are not friendly at all, and also the cleaners need to be changed, because they are not doing their job properly.

PureGym Birmingham City Centre offers a decent range of equipment and a generally spacious layout. The emphasis on electronic processes, however, means there’s a notable lack of readily available personal assistance when you encounter a query or need a helping hand. It’s a functional gym, but not overly welcoming in terms of direct customer interaction.

While the variety of machines is good, peak times can be challenging. You’re likely to compete for equipment and may experience the common issues associated with commercial gyms – namely, people occupying space without actively using the equipment. Overall, it’s a serviceable option for those focused on self-directed workouts.

Been this gym consistently for 2 years now. I’m satisfied with the range of equipment and ambience. The only snag is that it’s a little out of way for me which isn’t bad during the warmer months as I like walking the distance, it’s the colder months that can be quite tricky but that’s not the gym’s fault

I’m changing gyms specifically because of the teachers! I think it’s amazing that, when people are doing the wrong exercises, they pretend they don’t see, but you just need to be using the devices that they show up with their students to take turns! This is unbearable! Today an unfortunate passed by me and stopped me from training in CROCS and socks, but be sorry, I have hurt feet and even so I can’t train in peace, today was the end, I enrolled in another gym, I need a place where people treat me well or at least let me train in peace

I’ve had day passes here a few times over the years but I wouldn’t hurry back. It’s an alright gym when it’s quiet as it’s quite spacious and equipment does the job.
However, everything is electronic such as the process to get a gym pass so the in person customer service isn’t really there. It’s difficult to find staff if you have a question.
When it gets abit busier, good luck finding a machine. Plus because it’s a commercial gym you get the less serious people who just sit/stand around chatting, taking up equipment or staring at the ladies working out.

One of the worst smelling places I have ever been to. Equipment good enough, gym is a good size. But dozens of people in stale, un-laundered clothing, terrible body odor, not wearing anti-persistent etc. I went to the local corner shop to buy a face mask, I suggest you do the same if visiting. People sweat in gyms, to be expected. But the lack of hygiene of people using this gym before they pick up their first weight is unfathomable. Better ventilation, air-conditioning, vending machines selling deodorant (or even giving it away, truly) alongside the shakes, and emphasizing hygiene on the walls instead of the fridge-magnet ‘keep lifting’ style messaging, could help quickly. People get told often to shower before using public pools, the same should be done here.

During peak times this gym is overwhelming. Cardio floor is very good but when you go downstairs it’s too hot. Went about 6:30pm and it was hard to get on a lot of equipment. The equipment didn’t smell so great so hard to concentrate whilst training. There needs to be more sanitation equipment for how busy and sweaty it gets. More equipment is needed downstairs as it appears peak time hours cannot be handled. The gym needs more Aircon. Some of the equipment like the fly and pec Dec machines are really good same with the flexor machines.

Never ever open a core or plus plan without think carefully,,, I try to downgrade my plan for 2 weeks and can’t even find a way. You will get 0 human service in the gym. I tried on web send email send massage on Facebook and I still can’t downgrade….btw, if you come to this gym on peak time you will only got some running machine to use…

Large gym that’s it … Constantly under maintenance has been for years, flickering lights, flooded water fountains neglected locker rooms.
And back to it being a large gym, this actually becomes an annoyance when members don’t respect the premise and leave equipment everywhere and machines racked. Even going to the point other members bring speakers to the gym playing their own music out loud. Adding to this there is never staff there to correct this and when they are there they are just there for clients don’t actually care about the gym
I stayed at this gym for over a year to see if any of this would be fixed and nothing
