First acquainted with I AM YOGI (IAY) at the outdoor yoga at the Botanical Gardens during the summer which, I enjoyed immensely.
While getting a bit reluctant to go back indoors, I am only too glad that I give it a go with IAY at their cabin in Mosley this morning. Very welcoming welcome, beautiful cabin with sensational views and surroundings. Our instructor was great, the session made me feel connected with the environment and, reenergised!
My photos don’t do the place and definitely not the experience justice. It’s really good that free first session is available.
Can’t wait to go back for my next session. Thanks IAY!

What an amazing experience to practice yoga in a studio surrounded by nature. The stuff is very welcoming and there is fresh tea available that you can drink while you wait for the class to start. The first class is free and they offer you a discount after you’ve tried it. You can use the discount for your first month membership. It’s also important to know that you don’t need to have the key to the park, you just need to ring the bell at the door and they’ll open it for you. I’m definitely joining!

I have been a member of Barefoot for over 8 years. Lovely studio and staff. Great range of classes and great teachers. I have loved Tracy’s level 2/ 3 class on Wednesday, which has taken my practice to another level, so I’m sad to see this being replaced with another hot class. Barefoot has lots of long standing members so classes like Daves full Ashtanga series and Tracy’s level 2/3 are invaluable as they offer the opportunity to improve and develop. Please reconsider maintaining more of these classes.

The University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness offers a range of facilities, with a particularly impressive swimming pool and generally clean changing areas. The gym itself seems well-equipped and provides a positive environment for exercise. Access appears to be straightforward, and the overall impression is of a well-maintained space for student and community members.

However, consistent reports suggest areas for significant improvement in customer service and the handling of membership-related queries. Processes surrounding cancellations and suspensions appear unclear and occasionally lead to frustrating experiences. Addressing these issues would substantially enhance the overall member experience.

Very poor customer/client experience with staff. Raised a complaint in May with inadequate responses from Jamie Chick. Escalated to management team and have had no response from them, despite me emailing almost weekly for an update. Their own policies state management aim to respond within a few working days. I’ve followed up with Jamie and Mark multiple times – I’ve either been ignored or told to wait. It’s been 3 months. I regret paying in full for the year or I would’ve stopped my direct debit.

2 stars given because the facilities are thankfully better than the service from management. It gets very very busy at peak times. The sauna and steam room are both too small for a gym this size and can close at almost no notice for a week. Community members get 3 hours parking, which is good, but zero charging points in a huge multi-storey is outdated. Swipe access is also outdated – members should be able to scan a card instead.

The facilities are good, that’s just a shame that staff especially if you want to cancel your membership behave unpleasant and rude. I wanted to cancel my membership two months ago and still they keep charging me and their reason are terms and conditions that doesn’t make sense and never explained on their induction session.

ralph sharp

I’m very disappointed with the customer service and the handling of membership suspensions and cancellations. I requested to freeze my membership on November 30th, before my next billing date, yet I was still charged for December. When I explained my situation and financial constraints, there was no flexibility or willingness to help, even though I couldn’t use the facilities for that month. Additionally, the requirement to give a full calendar month’s notice meant I had to pay for two extra months beyond what I planned.

While the facilities themselves are good, there are often issues with availability. The sauna is frequently overcrowded, and there’s limited access to equipment, forcing you to alter your workout routine. Given the price of the membership, the overall experience simply isn’t worth it.

This lack of understanding, rigid policies, and the overcrowding have left me frustrated and dissatisfied. I would not recommend this service to others based on my experience.

Aaron Hobday

I’ve been a member of this gym since May having paid for a year’s membership upfront, which I now regret.  Unfortunately, my experience has been quite disappointing. The gym’s facilities are excellent, don’t get me wrong. However, it is consistently overcrowded from 4pm, which makes it very difficult to use the equipment without extended wait times. Additionally, finding an available locker is a challenge, as they are almost always fully occupied. I had high hopes when I joined, but the overcrowding and lack of access to facilities have made it difficult to fully use my membership and train effectively. I would recommend considering other options if you’re looking for a more accessible gym experience.

Great, modern facilities here with a nice Costa over looking the pool. Pool is great but changing rooms could a hit cleaner and the showers aren’t fantastic for a smaller person! Spin studio is fab and the instructors are first rate.

New, clean, well-equipped sports and fitness centre with gym, pool, sauna, fitness halls and squash courts. The facilities are great, although sometimes it helps to find a time when the students are busy as it can get pretty packed in the pool and sauna, and they are kind of in their own social world of sports club chat, which is slightly strange as a member of the public.
Fitness halls do all the Les Mills classes as well as yoga, weights conditioning and Pilates. The long opening hours are a big plus, too.
Dry changing rooms are good, wet changing rooms are fairly gross. Wet changing room also only has push button showers which go off in 5 seconds, so they obviously don’t want you to have a proper shower there.
Gym gets busy with people doing weights, so again I avoid peak times.

I love Hotpod yoga Birmingham so much!!!! I initially went as a trial and quickly signed up for the introductory offer to which I became hooked! It became my routine going twice a week and sometimes even three times! I do find myself going to the same sessions as I love the flow of the instructors (Kelly, Lib, Maria, Chanelle). How many months later and i have attended over 60 classes! All of the instructors are amazing, so reassuring, they allow you to go at your own pace, remind you to listen to your body but also encourage you too! The cleanliness of the studio is amazing too and the pod smells amazing which really helps you to relax into the session! 100% recommendations, I can’t wait for my return! It is my favourite place to relax and have a good stretch out

Hotpod Yoga Birmingham is absolutely amazing! The pod itself is such a calming, immersive space and the heat really helps you relax and go deeper into each flow. I love that there are different types of classes to suit how you’re feeling—Hotpod Flow, Dynamic Flow, Nurturing Flow, and Foundation Flow, so there’s always the right option whether you want to push yourself or just unwind. Went to my first Hotpod Yoga session last night and as a regular gym goer I wasn’t too sure what to expect but I absolutely loved it!!!

Kelly was a brilliant lead, calming and encouraging. She’s incredibly knowledgable on all the poses – but also the varying comfort levels that we all have based on our own personal experience of yoga. I’ve only recently got back into yoga so I was a little nervous on what the intensity would be, but I felt so comfortable and I think I actually surprised myself.

I can absolutely see myself coming here regularly!

Abi is an earth angel! Her classes are just amazing. Abi is so kind and welcoming she’s very knowledgeable about women’s bodies (pregnancy, birth and postpartum) and tailors the class to meet your individual needs. I have attended pregnancy yoga, 1:1 yoga and now mum and baby yoga. I love the combination of wellbeing check ins, essentials oils, calming music, stretches, mindfulness and poetry. Abi is so generous with her time and is always willing to help. I really look forward to Abi’s classes and always come away feeling relaxed and refreshed. Thank you ❤️

I have been having private yoga sessions with Abi for a couple of months. Abi is an experienced yoga teacher who is nice, patient and encouraging. Abi spends time listening to my needs and goals and tailors each session. All sessions are at the appropriate level of difficulty and challenging from time to time which is exactly what I need. After a few months of practice, I am really seeing myself moving towards a more advanced level. I have enjoyed my yoga journey with Abi a lot.
Practising yoga has helped me release stress and improve sleep quality. I highly recommend Abi’s private sessions, especially if you want to achieve certain goals in your practice or have specific needs.

I’ve recently had around 10 private lessons with Abi and attended a few of her group classes in the past. It’s always a great experience learning Yoga with Abi. She is very caring & encouraging and I always feel comfortable trying something new and outside of my comfort zone.

As a Hindu girl, It’s great to see Abi talk through the Sanskrit postures as well as the western labels. She shows passion for the history & philosophy of yoga.

I’d definitely recommend joining one of her classes if you’re thinking about getting into Yoga. You’ll definitely have a wholesome experience.

Starting out as a complete beginner, I’ve been regularly attending classes at Abi’s lovely Harborne studio for almost 6 years now, and having reached my early sixties, I feel the benefits of regular practice more than ever (so it’s never too late to start)!. My flexibility, strength, and overall wellbeing have improved enormously, and yoga has become such an important part of my life.
Abi’s teaching is excellent – clear, encouraging, and always offering options so that everyone, whatever their ability, can feel supported and challenged in the right way. The studio itself has such a welcoming and positive atmosphere.
It’s always a joy to come to Abi’s classes knowing everyone will be made to feel welcome regardless of experience or ability.
Monthly Yoga Nidra sessions led by either Abi or Jen, are simply amazing too. They provide the deepest sense of rest and renewal (invariably followed by a great night’s sleep) and complement my regular weekly classes perfectly.
I feel so fortunate to be part of this community and I’m very grateful for the positive impact yoga with Abi has on my wellbeing- I really can’t recommend Abi or yoga highly enough.

So much more than yoga.

I attended Abi’s pregnancy and mum and baby yoga classes and genuinely believe that her classes made my pregnancy and recovery more peaceful, restorative and fun.

Although Abi will tell me I’m not, I’m pretty hopeless at yoga, but that didn’t, and doesn’t matter. I still gained so much from the classes, from breathing techniques (which I used during my c-section) to making new friends. Abi has a wonderful way of making you feel cared for, warm, and calm. She was a very special part of my journey to motherhood.

If you’re considering joining a class, then do, you won’t regret it.

I went to Abi for a session of 5 private 1:1 pregnancy yoga’s spanning across 5 months. This was initially to be able to complement the non pregnancy yoga classes that I was still attending to be able to give me the knowledge and skills to safely practice still. Abi was great at this and quickly made me feel confident with the modifications she gave me. I’m so glad I booked a block of 5 sessions as I knew they’d help me but I didn’t anticipate just how needed they were. As a midwife, group pregnancy yoga classes weren’t exactly what I needed, but the 1:1 classes always left me feeling so much calmer, no matter what was going on before the session. Abi always checked in before a session, but also has a magic way of knowing exactly what I needed on the day, often adding in things I hadn’t asked for but really needed. Abi’s session been one of the very few things to really calm my nervous system down and I’m so grateful for that. I thoroughly recommend her classes to anyone

A gorgeous cosy gem in Stirchley! There’s a great variety of classes and workshops. It’s clean, tidy and so welcoming. Everyone is really friendly at this Yoga studio and you can always manage to strike up a conversation with someone before or after class and feel part of the community. I’ve been part of the Yoga Borne Community since it opened in 2019 and through its recent change in ownership. Karine & Jay are fabulous human beings! They aim to create an authentic space to share the true teachings of Yoga, are really supportive of other small businesses and even run craft markets to help others sell their handmade products. I highly recommend trying out a few classes and following their social media for updates on markets and local events! xx

I absolutely love this gym. I was grateful to have a discounted membership due to the work I do and think for the price I pay its excellent value for money. I love the city centre location, the pool facilities with steam room and sauna and all the extra facilities like the climbing wall that many other gyms don’t have. The Zumba instructor is second to none and I love the sunshine she brings to every session making you feel confident and making it fun for everyone.

Was looking in to joining this gym and becoming a member, called up and spoke to someone called Giselle over the phone who was a little rude and not very helpful. I asked if there was a day pass available as it does state online that they are available yet she said they are not and that it is a members only club so they wouldn’t be such a thing? So you want me to sign up to not even trial out the gym? No extra information was given and she was very hostile. Honestly really disappointed, better off sticking with David Lloyd as at least the customer service is better and the staff are much kinder!

I attended the mom and baby yoga sessions in Stirchley with Kate. They were wonderful and by far my favourite baby group that I have ever attended. Kate was such a kind and caring instructor, always checking in with us, taking time to learn about us and even providing little treats. She took the most beautiful, candid photos of me and my little boy, which as a mom, you don’t get many of!
I can honestly say that every week, l I left, I feeling much more relaxed, cared for and energised than I did when I got there. This is a part of maternity leave that I am really going to miss. Highly recommend!

Kate is a wonderful yoga teacher, always happy to answer any questions and provide useful resources. I’ve been attending her pregnancy yoga group for a while and I couldn’t recommend it more! The group has provided me with a lovely community of pregnant women who share their experiences which has been so valuable to me! Kate also does a mommy and baby group which I will certainly be attending after the birth of my little girl!

I did Pregnancy and Mum&baby classes – both were so lovely. Kate creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere in all the classes, really supportive and nurturing. The yoga, stretches, relaxation (and tea & biscuits!) helped keep me sane throughout my pregnancy and the sleep-deprived newborn months! I would definitely recommend her classes 🙂

Absolutely loved pregnancy yoga and mom and baby yoga with Kate! It’s such a warm, welcoming environment. It’s lovely to connect, stretch and have space to relax and chat over tea and snacks afterwards. Kate is amazingly kind and genuinely cares for the mothers and also makes some scrumptious cakes! Kate is passionate about what she does and you can feel it. Thank you for a wonderful calming experience amongst the chaos after delivery. Couldn’t recommend enough!!

Kate is a lovely person, very kind and caring she looks after everyone very well and makes a great cuppa at the end with the best biscuits!

I went to the evening beginners class tonight with Ramen, I had always wanted to try yoga but was so worried and it was out of my comfort zone, but the moment I went in I felt so welcome! The lovely receptionist showed me around, and Ramen spoke to me about what to expect too. The room was very calming and relaxing and the atmosphere was pure. Everyone there too was very polite and friendly ! Although it made me realise how stiff and wobbly I am , I really enjoyed and and will be returning! ‍♀️

I’ve tried several hot yoga studios in Birmingham, and Sweat Yoga stands out as the best by far. The studio is spacious, comfortable, and well-maintained, with separate changing rooms and showers for both men and women—something that many other studios lack.

The instructors are fantastic, and the classes, which reach a powerful 40 degrees, really do the job. The staff are always helpful and welcoming. They mentioned that they’ll bring back the lunchtime classes if enough people ask for them, so I’m hoping to see those return in the fall.

I recently had the pleasure of attending classes at Yoga Sweat, and I must say, it was an absolutely wonderful experience. From the moment I walked through the door, I felt welcomed and at ease as an absolute beginner.

The yoga instructors are all highly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do, and it really shows in the quality of their classes. They are able to create a warm and supportive environment that allows you to fully relax and focus on your practice.

One thing I particularly loved about this studio is the variety of classes they offer. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced yogi, there’s something for everyone here. I particularly enjoyed the gentle yoga classes, which were perfect for me as someone who is still fairly new to yoga.

Overall, I can’t recommend Yoga Sweat enough. Whether you’re looking to improve your physical health, reduce stress, or just enjoy some much-needed relaxation, this studio has everything you need. If you’re in the area, I highly encourage you to check it out!

I had the pleasure of discovering Yoga Sweat 2 months ago and I couldn’t be more thrilled to share my experience.

The attention to detail in creating a peaceful environment truly enhances the overall experience. The space is impeccably clean.

The instructors are nothing short of phenomenal. They are warm and possess a genuine passion for yoga. They mainly do hot yoga classes but there is a variety of classes offered and each yoga instructor has their own unique way of delivery. Whether you’re seeking a vigorous Vinyasa flow to invigorate your body or a restorative class to soothe your soul. The classes are thoughtfully curated to cater to practitioners of all levels, from beginners to seasoned yogis. The instructors guide you through each pose with clarity and encourage you to listen to your body, fostering a non-judgmental and supportive atmosphere.

The sense of community at Yoga Sweat is palpable. I felt welcomed from day one, and the friendly staff and fellow practitioners create a warm and inclusive environment.

Yoga classes with Claire are brilliantly structured, starting with an immediately relaxing introduction which puts you at ease, a considered build up of postures which progressively push your balance and stamina, and a relaxing wind-down – which encourages you to reflect upon your practice and feel good about your accomplishments that day, regardless of skill. Claire considers multiple posture options – which caters for beginners like me, as well as experienced Yogis. Each class is filled with careful explanations and reasons for each posture, coupled with insight into the history and benefits of Yoga practice as a whole. There is a strong focus on the breath throughout the practice, which both helps improve focus and stamina, but also relaxation. I always leave classes with Claire feeling relaxed and refreshed – brilliant classes!

Claire’s Monday yoga class is a highlight of my week. I look forward to it all weekend and I really am sad if I miss it, which I rarely do! It’s a great thing to do at the start of the week; I come away feeeling calm, super bendy and like I can handle anything work and life throws my way. The movement, strengthening and stretching is great for my physical fitness, but the mindfulness yoga brings is so important too. Claire is so wise, she delights us with insight into the world around us, the seasons, the workings of the universe and what she shares is always so useful and thought provoking.I always leave feeling like I’ve learned some new magic! She is truly spellbinding. The welcoming inclusivity of the class is wonderful too; no matter your level, Claire’s yoga is right for everyone, the focus being on you, and listening to what your body needs. Thank you so much Claire, I couldn’t recommend your classes highly enough!

Claire’s slow-flow yoga classes at Cambridge Road Methodist Church are wonderful. The space is plentiful, the floor is warm and the music is relaxing. Claire gently leads the class to flow from one position to the next, outlining variations and offering invitations to bespoke your practice along the way. Through a mixture of poetry, prose and silence, Claire encourages mindfulness while holding positions. I always feel calmer, more balanced and peaceful at the end of a session.

Catalog of services offered by yoga centers in Birmingham

    Hatha Yoga Classes

Many yoga centers in Birmingham offer Hatha yoga classes. This style typically focuses on foundational poses, breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation, making it a good starting point for beginners and a grounding practice for experienced practitioners. Emphasis is usually placed on holding poses for a few breaths, fostering strength and flexibility.

    Vinyasa Flow Yoga

Vinyasa flow yoga is a dynamic style that links movement with breath. Yoga centers offer various Vinyasa classes, often incorporating creative sequences and transitions. This style can build strength, improve cardiovascular health, and increase body awareness.

    Restorative Yoga Sessions

For those seeking relaxation and stress relief, restorative yoga sessions are commonly offered. These classes involve holding passive poses supported by props like blankets, bolsters, and blocks, promoting deep relaxation and releasing tension in the body. They are particularly beneficial for those experiencing anxiety or recovering from injuries.

    Yin Yoga Practices

Yoga centers in Birmingham often provide Yin yoga practices. Yin focuses on holding poses for longer durations (typically 3-5 minutes), targeting the deep connective tissues (fascia). This style is excellent for increasing flexibility, improving joint mobility, and cultivating mindfulness.

    Prenatal Yoga Classes

Specifically designed for expectant mothers, prenatal yoga classes are frequently available. These classes focus on gentle stretches and breathing exercises to support a healthy pregnancy, reduce discomfort, and prepare for labor and delivery.

    Yoga Nidra Sessions

Yoga Nidra, or "yogic sleep," is a guided meditation technique offered at several centers. These Yoga Nidra sessions promote deep relaxation, reduce stress, and can improve sleep quality by guiding participants through various stages of consciousness.

    Ashtanga Yoga Instruction

For those seeking a more challenging and structured practice, some yoga centers in Birmingham provide Ashtanga yoga instruction. Ashtanga follows a specific sequence of poses synchronized with the breath, building strength, stamina, and focus. It’s a progressive system that demands discipline and commitment.

    Private Yoga Instruction

Many centers offer private yoga instruction for individuals seeking personalized attention and tailored programs. This allows for a customized approach addressing specific goals, limitations, or preferences, leading to a more effective and focused practice.

Frequently asked questions about yoga centers in Birmingham

What types of yoga are commonly offered?

Birmingham yoga centers typically offer a diverse range of yoga styles. You can usually find Hatha yoga, which is a foundational practice; Vinyasa yoga, known for its flow and linked movement; Ashtanga yoga, a more rigorous and set sequence; Restorative yoga, focused on deep relaxation; and sometimes specialized classes like Prenatal yoga or Yin yoga. It's best to check the individual studio's schedule.

How much do yoga classes typically cost?

Pricing for yoga classes in Birmingham can vary greatly. A single drop-in class generally costs between £10 and £20. Many studios offer packages, such as monthly memberships or class passes, which provide a more cost-effective option for regular practitioners. Introductory offers are also common for new students. Check the websites for current promotions.

What should I wear to a yoga class?

There's no strict dress code, but comfortable and flexible clothing is recommended. Typically, people wear leggings, yoga pants, or shorts for the lower body, and a t-shirt or tank top for the upper body. Avoid clothing that is too restrictive or revealing. Bare feet are standard, but you can use a yoga mat for hygiene and comfort.

Do I need to be flexible to start yoga?

Absolutely not! A common misconception is that you need to be flexible to begin yoga. Yoga is about the process of increasing flexibility, not a prerequisite. Classes are designed to accommodate all levels of experience and physical abilities. Instructors provide modifications for different poses.

What is the best way to find a suitable yoga center?

Finding the right yoga center depends on your personal preferences. Consider factors like location, class schedule, style of yoga offered, instructor's experience, and the overall atmosphere. Online reviews and testimonials can be valuable. Many centers offer introductory classes or trial periods.

Are there any yoga centers that cater specifically to beginners?

Yes, many yoga centers offer Beginner's Yoga classes or introductory series. These classes provide a foundational understanding of poses, breathing techniques, and alignment principles. They are designed to be welcoming and supportive for individuals with little or no prior yoga experience. Look for ‘introduction’ or ‘fundamentals’ courses.

What is the difference between a yoga studio and a gym that offers yoga?

While both offer yoga classes, the experience can differ. Yoga studios typically focus solely on yoga and related practices, creating a more dedicated and peaceful environment. Gyms often incorporate yoga into a broader range of fitness options. Consider what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for – a focused yoga space or a more general fitness facility.

What should I do if I have an injury or medical condition?

It’s crucial to consult with your doctor before starting yoga, especially if you have any pre-existing injuries or medical conditions, such as back pain, arthritis, or high blood pressure. Inform your yoga instructor about your condition so they can provide appropriate modifications and ensure your safety. Listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself beyond your limits.

What is "pranayama" and why is it part of yoga?

Pranayama refers to breathing techniques in yoga. It's an integral part of the practice because controlled breathing helps to calm the mind, improve oxygenation, and balance the nervous system. Many yoga classes will incorporate pranayama exercises alongside physical postures. Understanding the importance of breath can significantly enhance your yoga experience.

How can I ensure a positive and respectful environment in a yoga class?

A positive and respectful yoga environment is everyone’s responsibility. This includes arriving on time, silencing electronic devices, being mindful of your surroundings, and respecting the instructor and fellow students. Avoid excessive chatter and be supportive of others in their practice. Creating a welcoming space benefits everyone involved.
