We went to Sushi Passion for dinner and had a wonderful experience. The restaurant was almost full, which shows how popular it is, yet the service was still excellent. The staff were very friendly and attentive throughout.
We tried a variety of sushi, and each one was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The ambience is elegant and adds to the overall dining experience.
A great spot for authentic sushi and a lovely evening out. Highly recommend!

Not our first visit, we always had a good experience. But today was so wonderful that I had to leave a review for Sofia and the chefs working with her this evening. Service was friendly and relaxed and the food was outstanding. As we were the only guests left, the chefs made us a cute board and we really appreciated it.
Thank you to Sofia and the whole team for a great dinner experience 🙂

Hands down the best sushi I ever had !! My bf doesn’t even like sushi and he started loving it. It was so fresh and tender, The miso soup was so warm and tasty!! Dyla (our server) was amazing, the chefs, the atmosphere everyone was lovely. The type of customer service that makes you feel comfortable. I will 100% be back for my birthday and I must add, it’s worth every penny.

We visited Sushi Passion for lunch as an 18th birthday treat for my daughter. The waitress asked if we were celebrating a special occasion when I reserved the table. When we arrived for the meal, they had decorated the table, which was a lovely special touch. We sat at the table by the kitchen and had a wonderful conversation with Head chef Kamal and chef Ram who were great fun and provided us with some beautiful food. As good as I have tried outside of Japan. I wholly recommend you trying this restaurant. It rocks.

We had a lovely time dining at Yakinori Selly Oak! The kids’ menu was absolutely perfect – beautifully presented and just the right portion size. The chicken katsu was crispy and juicy, the rice was fluffy, and the curry sauce was rich and flavourful. We especially loved the thoughtful bento box layout, with fresh edamame, cucumber maki, shredded carrots, and those cute little dessert bites!
The atmosphere was bright and welcoming, and the staff were super friendly and attentive – they really made us feel at home. A great spot whether you’re dining with kids or just craving some comforting Japanese food. We’ll definitely be back soon!

Absolutely love Yakinori Selly Oak! The food is always fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. I tried the Chicken Katsu Curry and honestly, I didn’t expect much—but it completely blew me away. It was way better than I imagined—crispy, flavourful, and just simply awesome. The sushi and ramen are also top-notch. The staff are super friendly and the vibe is really welcoming. Whether it’s a quick bite or a chill dinner, this place never lets you down. Highly recommend!

Lovely food, piping hot and cooked fresh right in front of you! The chefs are excellent at what they do and the service is exceptional: Klara made our visit extra special! We had the teriyaki soba – one with the aromatic duck and the other with chicken and prawn. Food is very reasonably priced and I will be returning!

We were served by Evan who explained the menu, looked after us and was generally friendly with good recommendations for food. We tried the steak rice bowl, sushi and wok fried noodles, everything was delicious. We had a problem with the drinks, so the manager took them off the bill and made us a new one. Very pleased with the service, thank you!

We recently visited this restaurant for the first time, and we must say, the experience was exceptional!
My son was there couple of days before with his friends and insisted that we must come and try it
The atmosphere is very family-oriented, and the staff is incredibly polite, friendly, and respectful. Their halal menu is a delight, and variety of the flavors were absolutely delicious . Definitely we can’t wait to come back and try other dishes here. Highly recommend for anyone looking for delicious food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere!
In addition, They have a special Halal menu with plants of options

Good classic Korean food that hits the spot. Tends to be pretty busy but always a spot available. Lots of really good items on the menu to choose from for both food and drink.
Service I standard, nothing special. Vibe is nice for a restaurant.
Minus points for the kimchi pancake that was drenched in oil. We ordered two and both were soaked.
Otherwise happy to go again!

The food was FANTASTICALLY delicious but honestly what I loved the most was the staff. Even though it was super busy, they kept checking on us, smiling all the time and just making sure we were okay.
Huge thanks to TIA and WOOJAE, I don’t know how they do it!!! You can actually see the effort they put into everything, and at the same time you feel how much they cared.
That combination turned my stressful day into such a happy one. This place has amazing food, amazing vibes, and most of all, amazing people. No doubt I’ll be back again soon..

I recently visited this restaurant for the first time, and I must say, the experience was exceptional! The atmosphere is very family-oriented, and the staff is incredibly polite, friendly, and respectful. Their halal menu is a delight, and the flavors were absolutely on point. The Korean corn dog was so good—it was crispy and packed with flavor! They truly made my mum’s birthday special by going the extra mile, even writing a sweet note and providing a complimentary dessert. The spicy Korean stir fry was another standout dish—wow! I can’t wait to come back and enjoy another meal here. Highly recommend for anyone looking for delicious food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere!

I visited Kyoto Sushi & Grill for the first time and had a great experience. The food was fresh and delicious — I tried a variety of dishes and enjoyed every round.
The system is really unique: you pay around £33+ per person and get 4 rounds to order from the menu. In each round, you select your dishes, and they prepare everything fresh and bring it straight to your table. It’s not a buffet — it’s made to order, and the quality shows. You eat at your own pace, and when you’re ready, you move on to the next round.
The staff were amazing — friendly, attentive, and quick. The atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant, making the whole experience even better

Delicious freshly cooked Japanese food. You order 3 main dishes each round and have all you can eat for the 2 hours slot for around £33. You can order as many sides as you like. Drinks not included but Sake was nice at £5.50 for a small bottle.
Lovely staff and great service!!

The service and aesthetic inside were nice. We came for the shared dining lunch menu and ordered numerous dishes but honestly the sushi was not very nice and the side dishes were bland / tasteless. I wouldn’t come back again. The food is halal which is a bonus.

This is THE place to go in Birmingham and the West Midlands to try Sushi. £30 cash each for unlimited rounds of Sushi for a little over 2 hours. Everything on the menu is fair game, prepared fresh and smells amazing.
We will be back.

☆ 5/5
The all you can eat sushi is worth the price of £33.80. There are numerous rules. You have four sittings. 3 dishes per person plus sides over a 2.5 hour period.
We have dined here many times and the sushi roles are what we recommend. They come in portions of two and are made to order. Colourful well presented and tasty. The sushi roll choice was varied and covered all bases you would need to get lots of variety.
The fried dishes like the octopus balls were very fresh just not to the standard of the sushi. The edamame beans also had a few pods of beans which were hairy & older looking compared to the expected vivid green pods.
It’s £33.80 per person. They said to us that cash was “preferred” but offered no card payment alternative. There is a cash machine across the street so this is not the largest inconvenience. Service charge not applied to the final bill.
The service was slower than expected. But I think it’s because we ordered our second sitting after we finished the previous one and therefore didn’t have the “steady stream” of dishes coming to the table.
Would definitely come back. Perfect for a weekend lunch time in the city after shopping.

Yakinori – Japanese Kitchen offers a delightful experience with their food presentation being a particular highlight. The atmosphere is clearly designed to be welcoming, and the staff are typically noted for being attentive and eager to assist. It seems a consistently positive element is the attention to detail shown in the service provided.
While reviews suggest the flavor profiles may not always perfectly capture a truly authentic Japanese taste, the quality of ingredients used is a strong point. The overall experience appears well-suited for a relaxed and enjoyable meal, particularly if you prioritize friendly service and beautiful plating.

Took my daughter here as she loves all things Japanese. She really wanted to try their bao buns and me the Gyozas.. we were not disappointed. My daughter had the chicken option, and I had the vegetable option.
We also ordered a portion of salmon and avocado sushi that was made fresh for us. All the food was served beautiful, was fresh and so tasty.
The staff was super, very informative, friendly, and helpful.
The atmosphere was very relaxed and informal. Perfect for a lunchtime drop it. Deco was a mix of fun neon lights and being elegant, with beautiful lanterns.
It was our first time, but I can definitely see us returning here for a second visit.

We came here for my elder brother’s birthday, without a booking, and were promptly sat. Couldn’t have asked for better service! A slice of cheesecake was brought out with a candle on which made his day! The food was great. I had the Hibachi steak bowl, cooked medium rare, which was delicious. Everyone really enjoyed their meal. Recommend highly!!

Great food. Really great. service was a little disjointed, with one of the main courses coming with the starters, and one of the starters coming with the mains- and an overlap anyway- at one point everything we ordered was on the table at the same time. Maybe I just don’t understand the cultural nuances of Japanese street food…

They have the most brilliant salmon bowl I have ever had in my life with just 9 quids – almost close to my taste standard in Asia, how bargain it could be. Taj, who is the general manager I believe and he delivered the excellent customer service. Will visit here many times for a nutritious and delicious lunch.

Got in for a quick lunch on a weekday. I like the sauce they used in the beef Donburi, which is sweet and mildly spicy. The beef on the other hand was a bit overcooked, still good. The calamari was covered by a thin layer of batter and only lightly salted. Will come again to try out some other items on the menu.

Kumo on Ladypool Road has quickly become my new favourite dessert spot. The pancakes are always made to perfection – light, fluffy, and never too heavy. The flavours are spot on, with the strawberry one being my personal favourite (and a big hit with the kids too).
I’ve been a few times now and will definitely keep coming back. On our last visit, they even gave us an extra dessert on the house – such a lovely touch. The guys running the place are really humble, friendly, and provide amazing service.
If you’re debating whether to try this place – just go for it. You won’t be disappointed.

First and foremost the Pilipino lady that served us was so sweet. Super welcoming and kind. I can’t remember exactly, but I want to say her name was Billi?
We only eat halal and the servers and chefs made absolute sure that they catered to us. The chef even came out with the teriyaki sauce to prove it didn’t have alcohol in it, though we didn’t ask!
The sushi buffet is good value for money, we left very full and pleased with our meal. The only thing I will mention is that I don’t remember there being tuna sushi on the platter.
I very much enjoyed the fresh chicken spring roll and the kids loved the noodles.

It seems to be a sought after place for its top floor sky high fancy dining experinece (tho not many choices) slash luxury bar with golden dance vibes.
However it is a bit of a greenhouse environment during summer, with all those very large glass windows, winter would seem to be a more comfortable time if you are heat sensitive.

My time at Shogun was amazing. Billi and her team did their best to ensure that the food at our graduation dinner was of excellent quality. The customer service they provided was undoubtably stupendous. We entertained, spoken kindly to and we really felt at home.
They went above and beyond to even help us celebrate with a cake! I would highly recommend that anyone reading this should come to Shogun for a good, authentic Japanese meal!

I haven’t been here in 9years. Was a bit sceptic
at first cos the restaurant was practically empty but boy oh boy were we in for a treat. The food was so good. The salad, spring rolls, soup and chicken teriyaki were . The ice cream was a big let down though. All in all a great experience.

Unreal! We came on a Sunday at around 6:30 to celebrate our friend Eashwar’s birthday and we had Bong serving us. He was so hard working and included everyone on our table to come up and perform. We later learnt he was the first chef at Shogun and that hes been in the business for many years. I highly recommend this place and wish Bong and the staff all the best. Thanks for the experience guys on behalf of me and the boys❤️.

Food was decent, not a great selection available but when we asked for something it was made quickly. The biggest down side was the service, the chef had to greet us because no-one else was available, after we were sat down no-one came to take our drinks order and when I went to ask I was surprised when the guy sat at the bar picked up a tablet and offered to take my order, he looked like a customer!
All in all it was ok but not sure I’d repeat the experience. Dessert was amazing though.

I went for the Bottomless Belt today, and it was my first time visiting. No complaints about the quality of the food, which was made to a high standard. However, a member of staff clearly told me that I could order select items like gyoza, katsu curry etc off the menu as part of the bottomless belt.
Unfortunately, when I came to order these items, another member of staff apologised and said the policy had changed, and I would only have the cold options on the belt. This left me disappointed, as I wouldn’t have the same experience I could’ve had months earlier. In addition the belt options were basically variations of the same thing. Salmon on rice (nigiri), salmon in rice (futomaki) or salmon on its own (sashimi). I saw Edamame once (I managed to nab it), and waited almost an hour for desserts to roll out.
When it came to settling my bill, I was almost overcharged by £10 on the service fee, something I was not made aware of beforehand either online or in person. When I politely contested the charge, it was edited before my eyes to £2.25. Even this amount was too much, as I only wished to pay £29.95. Considering the mistakes made, I did not believe a service charge was warranted.
All in all, this experience has dissuaded me from bringing my family here in the future, and I hope you can look into some of these issues as it may hinder return visits.

Sushi lunch for four. The mushroom teriyaki rice bowl was tasty, the salmon plate for two was okay. A couple of the conveyor plates didn’t seem particularly fresh or were presented at a lower standard than I have previously enjoyed. The miso machine was also out of order.
No button to call for service, so was a bit slow.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t visit this one again.

We recently took part in the Yo! Sushi School and had a fantastic experience. The session was fun, engaging, and a great way to learn how to make sushi from scratch. Wilma, our teacher, was excellent—she explained everything clearly, made the class really enjoyable, and kept the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming. The quality of the food and the hands-on approach made it even better. Overall, it was a brilliant experience and I would highly recommend it. Five stars.

The staff here are friendly and their service is excellent. Food is good but portions are small, so you buy more then suddenly it’s very expensive… But if you can do maths before you order, then you will probably enjoy it here.

Overall the food is very good. It’s always fresh and tasty but the portion sizes are small and quite expensive. It’s very nice for a special occasion or a light lunch.
The restaurant is clean and tidy and the food is easy to order via the QR code.
It’s well worth a visit if you like Japanese Food but be prepared to be hungry an hour after you eat
Also…There is a service charge added to your bill as standard. Although i believe in tipping when service is good i don’t think it should be expected.

Absolutely Outstanding!
I recently visited Tokyo Izakaya and was blown away by the whole experience. The atmosphere is warm, stylish, and authentically Japanese. You feel like you’ve stepped straight into a Tokyo backstreet eatery. The sushi was incredibly fresh and beautifully presented; every bite melted in the mouth. I’ve tried Chicken Kastu Curry, Chicken Kastu, Akita Mango and Salmon Maki, and Volcano Dragon Maki. It was full of flavour and grilled to perfection.
The staff were friendly, attentive, and made great recommendations from both the food and sake menu. The Robata grill dishes were a standout, and the tonkotsu ramen was rich, comforting, and packed with umami. A big thank you to Jessica, Mukesh, and the entire team for the delicious food and warm hospitality.
If you’re looking for genuine Japanese dining in Birmingham, this is easily one of the best. I’ll definitely be returning. Highly recommended!

Tokyo Izakaya is a pet-friendly Japanese restaurant. I went with a friend and we brought along our little dog, which was great. We had the tonkotsu ramen. The broth and noodles were okay, but the chashu was tasty. The highlight was definitely the Volcano Sushi, which I highly recommend. Really delicious!

this is probably our 3rd time going and we were blown away once again.
we had a table booked for 4:30 for valentines day, we got there slightly early but were seated right away.
they gave us a good amount of time to pick our food and drinks.
they took our orders, and starting bringing out the food not even 15mins after!
the food was incredible as always, and the blue lagoon was delicious.
they played beautiful music, and even played happy birthday for the table next to us.
overall an amazing experience and we will definitely be going again.

Customer Reviews
Most people will walk past Mount Fuji on a daily basis hopping around the Bullring. For many, there’s that ‘other place’ that sells ramen, donburi etc…
The food at Mount Fuji makes their ramen taste like puddle water. Myself and a friend visited and tried two different types of ramen and some miso soup. All were exceptional, and I use that word rarely to describe food. Truly exceptional.
I had the Chicken spicy tonkotsu ramen with added pork belly, and was blown away first by the portion size. This food meant business. The proportion of protein to noodle to broth is perfect, and you get two veg gyozas pierced perfectly on the top of the dish not to get soggy. My friend had the prawn ramen tonkotsu style and not only were the prawns huge, they were clearly fresh before being panko fried.
There’s a reason there’s no condiments on the table. You simply don’t need them. Traditionally every ramen shop in Tokyo would have a slightly different broth, and you would learn to choose what you like. There’s space in the options to choose your base and heat. You don’t need to add anything to it. It’d be like asking for Ketchup in a French restaurant.
The miso soup, beautifully served and a wonderful palette cleanser. The range of drinks are vast, and they even have some in a little store to take home. Someone please buy me the sake serving set!!!
Exceptional service, polite, and the staff know Japanese which is a bonus for anyone learning the language. The menu also serves bento boxes and other rice dishes as well as sushi. Although we didn’t order these, they looked great from afar. The music ranges from calming instrumental to K/J Pop, but the food is so good you barely notice.
If you get stuck waiting ‘at the other place’, turn around and walk up the left ramp. You won’t be disappointed!
どうもありがとうございます!

A Japanese restaurant in Birmingham city centre. It’s especially known for its ramen and bento, reasonably priced and quite popular, so expect a queue during peak hours. The interior has the vibe of a small Japanese eatery. The Asian staff are polite and attentive. Seating is a bit tight but still fairly comfortable.
Salmon Combo Plate & Nigiri Sushi Set B
Not the freshest sushi I’ve had, and the presentation was rather plain, but portions were generous and satisfying. With more refined plating, it could be even better.
Children’s Bento
Served in a fun, train shaped tray that immediately caught the kids’ attention! Includes fried chicken, prawn, rice ball, tamagoyaki, fruit, and a cup of apple juice. Well balanced and filling, the kids were delighted!
Mount Fuji Giant Prawn Ramen
Comes with two large fried prawns and dumplings. Even though the fried items were soaked in the soup, they stayed flavorful. The tonkotsu broth was rich and aromatic without being overly salty.
Melon Cream Soda
A nostalgic Japanese treat! Classic melon soda with a scoop of ice cream. Tastes great and perfect for photos.

Amazing Japanese place, such a convenient and easy place to go to. The food came really quick but was so delicious and well prepared, everyone here was very nice too. The atmosphere was really warm and welcoming. Not to mention the music was great too, good vibe. The tonkotsu kyushu ramen is 10/10.

Mount Fuji is a Japanese restaurant, and since my friend and I love ramen, we ordered the tonkotsu ramen. Honestly, it was just average—I’d give it a 65 out of 100. What was really disappointing was that when we ordered, the staff told us they had run out of chashu for all ramen dishes… and this was right when they had just opened for the day.
The broth lacked depth and richness, which was a letdown. The gyoza and chicken were decent, and the takoyaki was actually pretty good.

Frequently Asked Questions About Japanese Restaurants in Birmingham
What types of Japanese cuisine can I find in Birmingham?
Birmingham offers a diverse range of Japanese cuisine. You’re likely to find traditional sushi and sashimi, ramen shops with various broth options, tempura restaurants specializing in deep-fried dishes, yakitori grills serving skewered meats, and establishments offering donburi (rice bowl dishes). Some restaurants may also feature izakaya-style dining, which is similar to a Japanese pub with small plates and drinks.
Are there any authentic Japanese restaurants in Birmingham?
Determining ‘authenticity’ can be subjective, but Birmingham boasts several restaurants striving for traditional preparation methods and high-quality ingredients. Look for places that use imported Japanese ingredients or have chefs trained in Japan. Customer reviews often provide insights into the level of authenticity diners perceive.
What's the typical price range for a meal at a Japanese restaurant?
The price range varies considerably based on the type of restaurant and location. A casual ramen shop might have a meal costing around £10-£15, while a high-end sushi restaurant could easily reach £30-£50 or more per person. Lunch specials often offer more affordable options.
Do Japanese restaurants in Birmingham cater to dietary restrictions?
Many Japanese restaurants are increasingly aware of dietary needs. You can often find vegetarian and vegan options, such as vegetable sushi rolls or tofu-based dishes. When it comes to gluten-free diets, soy sauce typically contains wheat, so it’s crucial to inquire about alternatives or modifications. Communication with the restaurant is key.
What is the best way to make a reservation?
The best way to make a reservation depends on the specific restaurant. Many restaurants accept reservations through their websites or by phone. Some popular establishments may require reservations well in advance, especially for weekend dining. It's always a good idea to check the restaurant's policies regarding reservations. Online booking platforms are also commonly used.
What's the difference between sushi and sashimi?
While both are Japanese delicacies, there's a key distinction. Sushi involves vinegared rice combined with other ingredients, like fish, vegetables, or seaweed. Sashimi, on the other hand, is simply thinly sliced, raw fish served without the rice. Both are typically enjoyed with soy sauce and wasabi.
What are some popular sushi rolls to try?
If you're new to sushi, some popular and approachable rolls include the California roll (crab, avocado, cucumber), the Philadelphia roll (smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber), and the Spicy Tuna roll (tuna, spicy mayo, cucumber). For more adventurous palates, try the Dragon roll or the Rainbow roll.
What is 'omakase'?
Omakase (literally "I'll leave it to you") is a traditional dining experience where you place your trust in the chef. The chef then selects and prepares a series of dishes based on the seasonal ingredients and their expertise. It's usually a more expensive option but offers a unique and personalized culinary journey.
Are there any Japanese restaurants with private dining rooms?
Several Japanese restaurants in Birmingham offer private dining rooms, ideal for celebrations, business meetings, or intimate gatherings. These rooms often provide a more secluded and personalized dining experience. It's best to contact the restaurant directly to inquire about availability and pricing for private dining.
What's the best time to visit a Japanese restaurant to avoid crowds?
To avoid large crowds, consider visiting a Japanese restaurant during off-peak hours. Weekday lunches and early weeknight dinners are usually less busy than weekend evenings. Checking the restaurant's website or contacting them directly can provide insights into their busiest times. Some offer lunch specials that make earlier dining even more appealing.
