We had a wonderful meal, drinks and service this evening at Banana Tree.
Food was really flavoursome and absolutely just perfect.
Fully halal.
Service was lovely too
Our main sever was James with a little help from Hemang. All staff were really pleasant and friendly.
Forgot to take pics of the starters but we had the duck pancakes (to die for!) chicken dumplings, absolutely divine, and cod mini balls, very nice!

They really have a wonderful approach which keeps us coming back. Food is excellent, good value for money and large portions. We would always recommend this restaurant and will always return. Cannot fault the staff or the food. Just wonderful.

Came here with my group of friends last evening, had a really good time. The food and service were exceptional. The staff were nice to ask for allergies before hand. There is so much variety here which will make you want to come back to try all of them. Would definitely visit the place again and would recommend to anyone. Entire food menu is halal too, so give it a go.

Had a lovely lunch yesterday for my birthday. We all had something different to eat. 2 of the 5 people I was with are vegetarians and we were pleased there was a good choice. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had cocktails and wine, and all were lovely. Lovely restaurant was my first visit but won’t be my last.

Dominic Isherwood

I’d give 6 stars if possible. I was seated quickly, served without fuss, my food exceeded expectations and was reasonably priced. Great coffee as well. There’s no reason to go to a chain breakfast place in Birmingham over this place, in my opinion. Support independents!

Grand Central Kitchen in Birmingham was a bit of a mixed bag, landing squarely at a 3 out of 5 experience for us. It’s a fantastic location, right in the heart of the city with all the buzz of the station, making it a perfect spot for a pre-train coffee or a casual bite. The interior has a great, modern vibe that feels both stylish and welcoming.

We were really impressed with the coffee, which was absolutely top-notch—rich, flavourful, and clearly made with care and quality beans. It’s the kind of drink that would easily draw you back on its own merit. The food menu is appealing and our choices were tasty and well-presented when they finally arrived.

However, the service was unfortunately where things stumbled. While the staff were perfectly pleasant and apologetic, the wait for both our order to be taken and for our coffee to arrive was significantly longer than it should have been. The restaurant wasn’t at full capacity, which made the delays all the more noticeable. It didn’t ruin our visit, but it did take the shine off what should have been a quick and efficient stop.

Ultimately, Grand Central Kitchen has a lot of potential. The core product is excellent, but they need to find a way to streamline their operational flow. We’d pop in again for that excellent coffee, but only if we weren’t in a particular hurry.

Want great tasting food, no fuss and brilliant service… then this second to none cafe is unmissable!! It would be a mistake to stay in your hotel and not venture out to this flavoursome location!!
The service is rapid! Food is served hot!!

But the coffee… wow!! The regular flat white is a full cup of coffee… and better tasting than your chain coffee houses!!

Straight after getting off the train at Birmingham New Street yesterday, I popped into Grand Central Kitchen for some breakfast. Gotta say, I’d never had eggs and cheese like that before – absolutely delicious!
The staff were so friendly too. Special shout-out to the Iranian girl who was lovely, and the bloke (can’t remember his name!) who recommended some spots for me to check out in Digbeth. Loads of cool places to explore, so thank you both for the tips!
To be honest, I was a bit knackered when I came in and probably could’ve done with a nap right there and then. If I hadn’t been so tired, I’d have been even more buzzing about it all, haha. Anyway, cracking little spot – I’ll definitely swing by again next time I’m in Birmingham. Matee, I’m minging. Bloody love yaouw’

I had a meal at Grand Central Kitchen recently, and overall it was okay. The prices were fair, especially for the central location, which I appreciated. The staff were friendly and service was quick.

That said, the food itself didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The dishes looked good, but were missing a bit of flavour – just felt like they needed a bit more seasoning or something to bring them to life. I’ve definitely had better meals elsewhere in Birmingham.

Still, it’s not a bad spot if you’re nearby and need a bite – clean, convenient, and decent value. I’d give it 4 stars overall, mostly for the service and price.

This is a great spot for classic cafe breakfasts. We had the Full English and the house omelette and both were super tasty. The restaurant itself is simple, the tables are quite close together but it runs like clockwork! Staff are super friendly and made us feel so welcome. Portions are generous, food is delicious and turnover is fast. A great experience!

Wow! What an amazing experience!
Not only is the restaurant 100% vegetarian with clearly identified vegan options, the food is amazing!

The waiter was really attentive and so polite. Nothing was too much trouble! He asked us how spicy we like our food (nothing has a spice rating on the menu) – we said “hot” he asked if that was just hot or extra hot, so we went for the latter ️. The food was perfect, cooked fresh and full of flavour – the chilli naan was a real treat for my vegan wife as she never gets to eat naan bread!

Thank you, Barsana, you made our trip to Birmingham complete

We visited during lunchtime and ordered the Paneer Lababdar, Dal Makhani, Tandoori Roti, and Chilli Cheese Naan. The food was good, though a bit on the sweeter side—I personally prefer my curries more savory, so it wasn’t quite to my taste. The service, however, was excellent. Portions are slightly small, but overall, this is a lovely hidden gem for vegetarian cuisine in Edgbaston.

Excellent pure vegetarian place with prompt, attentive, warm service. We enjoyed the Paneer Lababdar, Mushroom Biryani, Garlic & Cheese Naan, and the Sev Puri; all were delicious. It’s on the mid-upper pricing tier for South Asian restaurants in Birmingham but you really get what you pay for here. Jash and Radhika looked after us and they did a brilliant job. We will be coming back!

We were possibly the only remaining vegans in the whole of the U.K. that hadn’t tried the world famous Mr Singhs!! So much choice and well worth taking a small detour on our travels. I had the smallest pizza and wedges and to be honest that was too much for me. I couldn’t help but take a cheesecake for later though! It would be rude not to. Loved it all. Thank you Me Singh, you’re a legend for bringing all this veggie and vegan loveliness into our lives. ❤️

The pizza was not to bad tasted ok but really dry i ordered vegan pizza without onions and no garlic at all jain diet pizza and dairy free vegan cheese, but my pizza base didn’t have no tomato sauce at all unless that contains onions but never the less if they advertise as a pure vegetarian pizza shop ideal for vegans then you would think that they could add a onion & garlic free tomatoes based i asked for mushrooms hardly any mushrooms on there i and £13.99 for a extra large dry pizza absolutely terrible. I even called 2 times and sent them photos on there what’s app they said somine would call me back nothing what’s so ever not even a sorry or basic apology. I won’t be going back at all. Vegan cheese nktceven properly melted hardly any mushrooms.

Very grateful for the caring service I received with my order – I’m a vegan and order the chilli sizzler which is similar to a mixed grill and made with soya chunks with pepper and mushrooms and for vegetarians paneer is included but due to not wanting to eat paneer due to the exploitation to cows Sarajjit who took my order in handsworth restaurant kindly allowed me to replace the paneer with some tandoori soya chunks – Thankyou Sarajjit for your understanding and allowing me to receive equality and get the same value for money as a vegetarian would as if you hadn’t I would have received less for the same price . This is what makes customers return and feel appreciated . Best food around – Please all try the Vegan Chilli Sizzler – Thankyou Sarajjit & Mr Singhs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Although the dishes in the restaurant are Vietnamese, they are all similar to fusion dishes in terms of price and taste. If you are looking for the taste of traditional moonlight, I think this may not be suitable for you, but aside from this, the overall taste is good, but the price-performance ratio is not compromised.

Delicious food and great service. The best Tom Yum soup I’ve ever had, at a portion size so big I couldn’t finish it! Perfect amount of chilli oil. Tender chicken and a great amount of veggies on top. Could taste how the spinach had been wilted separately with some garlic before being added to the top of the soup. It added such a lovely depth of flavour. Tasty dairy free shakes too!

This is a small restaurant with a good sized menu, offering a great selection of meat and seafood dishes and with an equally sized vegan and vegetarian menu to suit a range of dietary choices.
The staff are friendly and the service is speedy. I ordered the chilli pepper fried rice and my friend had the Vietnamese beef soup ho-fun pho. For the side we had a portion of pan fried cabbage and pork dumplings.
The food was beautiful and the presentation was really nice.
My squid was really well cooked with a crispy coating and the rice was perfectly cooked. The dumplings were also incredible – so crispy and bursting with flavour.
My friend also really enjoyed the food. The beer is extremely cheap here too compared to other restaurants. The cost for both of us to eat and drink was very cost effective for such delicious, filling food. I highly recommend cafe soya to anyone in Birmingham or visiting. We will definitely be back !

Very nice restaurant. We first thought that the food would just be a little expensive but it turned out to just be very massive portions. The food was tasty, except for the salad we ordered which was way too spicy which wasn’t specified in the menu.
All in all the staff were very competent and the atmosphere was amazing.

A lovely find in the Jewellery Quarter! Our first here and loved the atmosphere and service (special thanks to Kelly for looking after us, and the Manager for helping us with my dad’s wheelchair access).

Good menu and good gluten free choices. I had the pork belly (small plate) which was so delicious and no fat with fries and my husband had the Schnitzel Bagel with fries. Excellent quality, taste and service. We had a cranberry juice and a beer and the bill came to around £46.
Toilets very clean and service excellent. The interior is also beautiful. Will definitely be back.

Awesome food. Approx 5 minutes walk from Jewellery Quarter train station. It was recommended to us by the repair guy in A&A jewellery repair. So glad we listened to his advice. We went Thursday lunch around 1pm it was pretty quite. It was slightly disconcerting at first as the sports bar was empty but then we could see people further in so we ventured forth. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress called Kelly and seated quickly. We were left alone with just the right amount of time to order. We chose Coke Zero and a Cherry Pop Mocktail, it was delicious. To eat we shared a meat feast pizza, Cajun fries and triple cooked chips topped with shredded roast chicken and gravy. Everything was piping hot and absolutely delicious. All served in a good amount of time. The pizza was fresh out of the pizza oven next to where we sat smelled and tasted amazing. The Cajun seasoning was the perfect heat and flavour for me. (Would have been too spicy for my mom who would struggle with anything but salt and vinegar). The star was the triple cooked chips topped with chicken and gravy. I could eat it for days. Chips were beautifully soft and the chicken tasted perfect. We spent just under £50 which included a service charge, if that kind of thing bothers you, personally as long as it doesn’t take the piss I don’t care. Means I don’t need to stress about appropriate tips. Would 100% recommend, cannot wait to return.

TLDR: great tasting food, a tad expensive for tight wads, but worth every penny to me

Came here because it was recommended by the staff of the hotel I’m staying at.
The food is tasty and the portions are very good for the price.
The servers are attentive and helpful.
I only had breakfast but I will for sure be coming back to try the pizza, sunday roast or one of those delicious looking cocktails.

What a lovely place this is, honestly a gem of a place. The setting is very beautifully designed. Lush interior and carries a great atmosphere. The food was very nice too, their full English breakfast and smashed avocado was very tasty, as well as their iced latte. Kelly was a wonderful host, who made us feel very welcome and served us with the utmost care. Thank you for the attention to detail, hope to visit again soon.

We popped in here for a quick snack .

After being greeted warmly we were ushered upstairs. Apart from bao bubs there were also rice dishes too.

I had the pork belly with cured yolk and a side of bokchoy and mushrooms

For drinks I chose the shaghai which packed a lot of punch!

The flavours were incredible and would have tried more if were not eating later on!

We did share a sorbet trio of strawberry, coconut and pineapple. Delicious.

Overall good service just wish the side of bokchoy had more mushrooms and was less pricy for that it was

The most amazing Red Braised Pork Belly, It quite literally melts in your mouth, highly recommend the sweet and sour pork side dish, the most succulent pork I have ever tasted, and seasoned perfectly. Highly recommend for all occasions, nice atmosphere and lovely service!!!

The service was great, place is nice but the food sadly isn’t great. The boa buns lacked flavour and they were lukewarm at best. Not sure what the fuss is about. They were nice but that’s about it nothing great with a lack of flavour to them. The pork belly was the best one the beef shin was totally tasteless.

Super helpful and accommodating staff – I have complicated dietary requirements and they went to the effort of getting the chef to annotate the menu for me, even going so far as to design a special rice bowl option that met my needs! Definitely coming back, best restaurant experience since dietary complications started last year.

Great new (ish) location, really delicious food, good sensible strength house beer, friendly staff. What more could you want?

The pork belly bao was my favourite thing we ate, great texture and really good flavour, I’d definitely go back again.

I cannot even begin to describe how good the rice bowls are here, genuinely the the best. I make sure I visit each time I visit the town centre. Cannot wait to come back, best pork ever hands down!

***EDIT***
The above review was at the old location.

This new location has ruined what made it so special. The food itself doesn’t seem the same, smaller portions, less meat, less pickled veg, no nut sauce…
Everything that was good about it feels to have gone… after being an avid support of TBP, I feel there’s no longer a reason to come here. Sad. You can even see the difference in the photos of the rice bowls instantly.

First time trying Ethiopian food . The ambience was awsome , felt that uniqueness within the restaurant.
Service by the staffs were also very good.

Regarding the culinary experience, Injera( the spongy bread) was definitely an acquired taste , bit too sour/tangy for my palate.
All the side dishes were okay , some where good ,some not that great especially the middle gravy chicken .

Appreciate the authentic recipes. If you are a fan of Ethiopian food ,you would enjoy the experience .

Lovely food and very warm service. Felt like I was stepping out of Birmingham straight into Ethiopian culture. Really interesting to learn about Ethiopian food and we all (including our 12 and 13 year old children) thoroughly enjoyed the food. The coffee which was roasted on site was amazing !

A brilliant authentic African restaurant! It looks a bit run down from outside as does much of the surrounding area, but once you are inside you feel like you could be in Africa itself. The staff are really friendly and made us feel very welcome. The sharing platter for two was delicious and a very good way of trying 10 different dishes. We would definitely visit again. The only bad thing I can say was there were very few people in there for a Friday night which is a great shame as it deserves to be very busy.

Myself a Malaysian Chinese experienced a marvellous dining moment arranged by one of my Ethiopian friends. Travelled from Hatfield to Blue Nile, made our trip with a great end.

The platter was truly finger licking good yummy, full of different flavours mixing one another really a pleasure mouth satisfaction. Undoubtedly, the food was tip top so the services and atmosphere!!! After the platter was served, four of us finished the meal like in 15 mins, the ingredients and the meats were so so fresh and tenderness of the meat left me indulging.

We ate most of the meal with hand for traditional cultures. Not only that, I ordered myself a deep fried whole tilapia fish. The crispiness was amazing, I literally finished the fish left just a bone as everything was edible including the fish head as well.

Back here again after a long time and it is just as good as I remember it. The boss here knows me well and all the women I’ve brought here in the past, haha. The lamb is so good, it melts in your mouth, such tender meat. Too bad I don’t live close anymore, otherwise I would’ve been here almost daily. Prices are also very budget friendly. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to widen their flavour palette. 6 stars out of 5!! The ambience is incredible, authentic and makes you feel like you’re not in Birmingham. The coffee here is also a must try, it comes straight from the sacred lands of Ethiopia.

We went for the tasting menu as it was a special occasion. Food was full of interesting flavours, utterly delicious, and beautifully presented. I had made a mistake on the booking and it could all have gone horribly wrong but the staff sorted it brilliantly with kindness and grace. Compliments and thanks to all the staff – was a wonderful experience and well worth the long journey to get there.

Lovely experience and food. Will visit again.

Don’t be intimidated by the plate presentation, the servers are friendly and not stuck up. You can definitely feel satisfied after an appetizer and main.

I feel like the meat could’ve been seasoned a bit more but that’s my only criticism (it’s quite bland without any sauces).

Literally joy on a plate. The food was exceptional. The team kind, knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. AND dog friendly. Words are normally my thing but this food is so bonkersly good, that it defies words. Just try Chakana, if you are lucky enough to be in Birmingham. If not, travel to Birmingham to try it. It really is that good.

We had the pleasure of dining at Chakana and trying their tasting menus my wife had the full menu, while I had a pescatarian version. Both were absolutely incredible!

The creativity and flavour in every dish blew us away. My personal highlights were the Hot Crab Causa (so rich and full of depth), the Red Mullet in Hot Ceviche (the fish was soft, sweet, and the sauce was just ), the Purple Corn Sandwichito (my first ever squid “burger” and amazing!), and the Hake Amazonia with yuca stew, kiwicha grain, chocolate, and seaweed so unique and beautifully balanced.

My wife loved the Roasted Suckling Pig Pekinés, which she highly recommends, as well as the Hot Crab Causa and the Warm Beef Tiradito.

To finish, the Cherimoya Mousse with dulce de leche and miso paired with freshly made mini doughnuts was the perfect ending light, playful, and full of flavour.

The presentation of every plate was stunning, and the service was spot on our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable and made the experience feel very special.

Chakana might be Michelin-recommended, but honestly, it deserves every bit of praise the food, flavours, and creativity are on another level. Highly recommended!

Delicious food, presented beautifully. Unique menu. Cocktails were great, very tasty and inventive, lots of choice of bespoke cocktails. Tried ceviche and wouldn’t recommend if you aren’t expecting large chunks of fish. Quite pricy but a unique dining experience. The Sunday dinner was a strange choice but was still tasty.

Fantastic restaurant where I always love to come back for a special meal. Me and my husband were celebrating a wedding anniversary so we came for dinner on a Thursday evening. The service was great and attentive and food came relatively quickly. We ordered a pisco and a cocktail and they were both superb. Then we had a delicious complimentary bread with a dip and starters – seabream ceviche, tuna nikkei and salmon ceviche. All of them were excellent but I would say the salmon was the best (my husband said that for him it was the classic seabream). We then had suckling pig and hot red mullet ceviche. Again, both were superb, very interesting and creative flavour combinations and beautiful plating. For dessert we had picarones (doughnuts with ice cream) and they were a perfect sweet ending of a special meal. We even got complimentary anniversary plate with ice cream! 🙂
