The University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness offers impressive facilities, with a large pool and well-equipped gym areas. The sheer size of the space allows for a broad range of activities and offers a good selection of equipment. Membership options appear varied, catering to different needs and budgets.

However, communication and customer service seem to be an area requiring significant improvement. Dealing with membership changes, such as cancellations or suspensions, appears to be a frequent source of frustration for many. A more streamlined and responsive system for handling these requests would greatly enhance the overall experience. Administrative processes need streamlining.

Very poor customer/client experience with staff. Raised a complaint in May with inadequate responses from Jamie Chick. Escalated to management team and have had no response from them, despite me emailing almost weekly for an update. Their own policies state management aim to respond within a few working days. I’ve followed up with Jamie and Mark multiple times – I’ve either been ignored or told to wait. It’s been 3 months. I regret paying in full for the year or I would’ve stopped my direct debit.

2 stars given because the facilities are thankfully better than the service from management. It gets very very busy at peak times. The sauna and steam room are both too small for a gym this size and can close at almost no notice for a week. Community members get 3 hours parking, which is good, but zero charging points in a huge multi-storey is outdated. Swipe access is also outdated – members should be able to scan a card instead.

The facilities are good, that’s just a shame that staff especially if you want to cancel your membership behave unpleasant and rude. I wanted to cancel my membership two months ago and still they keep charging me and their reason are terms and conditions that doesn’t make sense and never explained on their induction session.

I’m very disappointed with the customer service and the handling of membership suspensions and cancellations. I requested to freeze my membership on November 30th, before my next billing date, yet I was still charged for December. When I explained my situation and financial constraints, there was no flexibility or willingness to help, even though I couldn’t use the facilities for that month. Additionally, the requirement to give a full calendar month’s notice meant I had to pay for two extra months beyond what I planned.

While the facilities themselves are good, there are often issues with availability. The sauna is frequently overcrowded, and there’s limited access to equipment, forcing you to alter your workout routine. Given the price of the membership, the overall experience simply isn’t worth it.

This lack of understanding, rigid policies, and the overcrowding have left me frustrated and dissatisfied. I would not recommend this service to others based on my experience.

I’ve been a member of this gym since May having paid for a year’s membership upfront, which I now regret.  Unfortunately, my experience has been quite disappointing. The gym’s facilities are excellent, don’t get me wrong. However, it is consistently overcrowded from 4pm, which makes it very difficult to use the equipment without extended wait times. Additionally, finding an available locker is a challenge, as they are almost always fully occupied. I had high hopes when I joined, but the overcrowding and lack of access to facilities have made it difficult to fully use my membership and train effectively. I would recommend considering other options if you’re looking for a more accessible gym experience.

Great, modern facilities here with a nice Costa over looking the pool. Pool is great but changing rooms could a hit cleaner and the showers aren’t fantastic for a smaller person! Spin studio is fab and the instructors are first rate.

New, clean, well-equipped sports and fitness centre with gym, pool, sauna, fitness halls and squash courts. The facilities are great, although sometimes it helps to find a time when the students are busy as it can get pretty packed in the pool and sauna, and they are kind of in their own social world of sports club chat, which is slightly strange as a member of the public.
Fitness halls do all the Les Mills classes as well as yoga, weights conditioning and Pilates. The long opening hours are a big plus, too.
Dry changing rooms are good, wet changing rooms are fairly gross. Wet changing room also only has push button showers which go off in 5 seconds, so they obviously don’t want you to have a proper shower there.
Gym gets busy with people doing weights, so again I avoid peak times.

My son was 4 when he joined Sues Swim School last year- he would cling to us in water and no confidence. Since joining he has swiftly moved through 3 stages already and has been very excited to move through the progress awards offered. We go on holiday in June and we will feel more relaxed about him being around water and he is so excited to be able to dunk and jump in.

Classes are perfect size lots of helpers in the water with your child giving you lots of confidence. You track progression online which is easy to log into and locate. We are really pleased with our sons progress

Lovely swimming school. My 8year old daughter has joined last year and has been progressing well. It’s well led and child focused,I particularly like the fact that it’s not as busy as regular swimming pool.
Facilities could be a bit more modern but given that lessons take place at school not much can be done about that. Staff are lovely, communication is good and is easy to access the app to follow the child’s progress.

Such a brilliant Swim School. We really can not recommend the company so much.
We had tried another school but they did not get in the pool and the groups were really big and no structure and support in the sessions. Sue s swim school sets limits to how many children are in the groups and session s so that every child has the instructor s in the water aswell as the numerous assistants at all times for the different pathways.
Sue s swim School came recommended to us and we have not looked back since.
The school is very strict on phones or any technical device in the changing rooms as safe guarding and the children s privacy is high on the agenda.
Very approachable team, deserve the 5 star review!!

My 6 yr old has been going to Cardinal Wiseman for about 9 or 10 months and we’re really pleased with the whole experience. Great communication on emails, easy-to-use online portal, and the swimming instructors are all so lovely and fantastic with children. Special shout-out to Zoe who my daughter absolutely loves. My daughter has really progressed with her swimming, so overall we’re very pleased and would recommend Sue’s Swim School ❤️

Sue’s swimming school at Cardinal Wiseman is one of the best I have ever encountered. The trainer-to-pupil ratio is excellent (about 1:2), and they provide clear progress goals and reports that are accessible online. The payment system is straightforward, and there’s a helpful support system in place to answer any questions. The changing room is clean, and there is a spacious waiting area for parents.

Most importantly, the trainers are very professional and encouraging, especially towards early learners who may be afraid of the water. Overall, the school offers exceptional value for both time and money. A special thanks to Madi, who my daughter absolutely adores!

Fox Hollies Leisure Centre provides a solid offering for local fitness needs. The range of facilities seems comprehensive, catering to various activities like swimming and gym workouts. There is generally a good selection of classes available which is a significant benefit for those looking for structured exercise routines. The pricing structure appears reasonable, although it could be improved with family discounts, which would broaden accessibility. Gym equipment maintenance is something that could be addressed more proactively.

The environment is pleasant and well-maintained, and the provision of a separate ladies-only gym demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity. Overall, Fox Hollies represents a dependable choice for individuals and families wanting a convenient and accessible fitness centre. Further enhancements to member communication and a greater focus on repair timelines would elevate the experience. A wider range of family membership options would be welcome.

I can’t speak highly enough of Adam and Emma at FOX Hollies Leisure Centre! They greet me with a big smile and make me feel so welcome. They’re always happy to help, whether it’s answering a question, giving a bit of advice, or just having a friendly chat that brightens my day. You can tell they genuinely care about the people who come here, and it makes such a difference. The leisure centre is great, but Adam and Emma are what make it feel like a community. Thank you both for always going the extra mile!

Fox Hollies Leisure Centre has very much gone down hill. After their recent “refurbish” of the gym facilities they only removed a lot of the machines and sectioned off part of the gym as a “ladies only gym”. Where I can understand the desire for privacy when exercising it is completely unnecessary as everyone keeps to themselves, aswell as this I think the sexism and discrimination demonstrated by their facilities has no place in the modern day society and I personally enjoy a diverse environment. In addition I think it’s unfair that female gym members can use the full facility whereas male members cannot. Aswell as this the machines in the main area are often out of order and remain that way for months on end without being repaired, also there are often buckets around the place as the ceiling leaks whenever it rains. The memberships are reasonable however there are no family discounts and we pay for 4 individual memberships. Also the memberships only include access too the gym, classes and the pool, however if you wish to use the badminton or squash courts you have to pay for it despite having a membership. Staff are often rude and unhelpful and generally avoid answering questions (but this does not include one of the most dedicated and genuinely lovely employees I’ve ever witnessed who always puts a smile on our faces – Kaz Mamood). As a result of all of these inadequacies to the surprise of no one they have already lost many patrons and we ourselves only continue to go as it is local, as a word of advice from myself if you can go anywhere else do so.

Terrible experience.
I was given incorrect information by one of your reception staff at fox Hollies which I am extremely unhappy about. When signing on I was told very clearly that I could cancel at any point in the 12 months and the payments would stop there were 4 other people present with me at the time who can vouch for this. This unacceptable. Since I have joined this gym I have had a terrible experience, the reception staff have been rude, when sessions were cancelled which happened alot might I add, I was not informed of this and when I would turn up for the sessions and wasted my time waiting then asked reception I was told anyone who booked after 1pm were not notified which does not make any sense why?! Other times I booked groups like zumba or aquatone and the instructors did not turn up this happened multiple times, the swimming pool always stinks and is dirty, there’s been mould on the tiles for months and months, sewage smell through the changing rooms, showering are floor originally blue is now a piss yellow very unhygienic with hairs stuck, shower rooms were mixed which just leaves no dignity for anyone, you charge so much advertising that every thing is included but then floats, squash and multiple other things are not actually included and you have pay additional for, there is alot of miss information given at time of signing up which is not an accurate reflection of how the gym actually is, there have also been times where the gym has been closed for renovations which meant I had to travel out to further gyms which is also a inconvenience and no compensation given. This is just some of the issues. I stopped going around 3 months ago and yet I’m expected to pay for remainder month’s when I was clearly told when signing up this is why this gym is different because you don’t take further payments once cancelled at any point of the contract which was clearly a lie. I had multiple family members registered here after hearing cancellation can be made at any point with no further payments taken out once cancelled, who also left when realising all the issues once they joined.

I changed from 1 star to 2 stars because of a call from Marion (apologies if i spelt your name incorrectly) who dealt with my cancellation very well, remained calm through my frustration and was able to help which is appreciated very much, thank you Marion.

Please can you tell the worker Kaz to stop barging into the women’s section unannounced. He just walks in no warning- it’s a female section for a reason! There are women who observe the hijab and take their modest clothing off and they run and panic to cover themselves when he walks in. He has no spatial awareness. Starts cleaning whilst you’re on a machines or talks over your head it’s very off-putting. He’s very nice but needs to know he can’t just start taking the weights when you’re using them or showing people machines when you’re on it!

Cocks Moors Woods Leisure Centre presents a mixed impression. While it offers essential facilities like a pool and flume, the overall upkeep appears to be a concern. There’s a clear need for more consistent cleaning of the changing areas, showers, and toilets to maintain a more pleasant and hygienic experience for users.

Improved maintenance and increased attention to cleanliness would significantly enhance the leisure centre’s appeal. The pool area itself is a draw, but its enjoyment is diminished by the surrounding conditions. Addressing these issues would restore the centre to a more respectable standard and positively impact user satisfaction.

I have been for a swim at cocks moors and have found the place absolutely disgusting. The swim change and shower area is absolutely disgraceful. The ladies toilets we’re filthy. The eating area. The tables we’re clean but the floor yet again was filthy. I used to be a regular, and the place was lovely and spotless. There used to be a cleaner on morning and night. Now hardly you see anyone. I think cocks moors needs some TLC. And a industrial clean I won’t be returning for a while and I be telling my friends not to go unless you want to be ill.such ashame cocks moors

Reasonable pool with flume and baby pool. However, the showers don’t work (cold and no pressure, and have been like this for months, so this is a deliberate choice by the managers). Who provides a swimming pool without functional showers? There are no private showers either. The changing rooms are filthy and cramped and the toilets are grim. I used to be a regular, went again to see if it’s been improved but unfortunately not.

I have been using this centre for some years now but lately it’s gone down. I use swimming pool only and the cleanliness of wet and dry areas is poor. Dirty floors, dirty changing cubicles and clumps of hair in the shower drain. I don’t understand the ‘no outerwear’ signs all around where ‘the outer’is much cleaner than inside and who in their right mind would walk barefoot on those disgusting floors? Toilets are tired, with broken cubicle locks and dirty floor that could really use a pressure washer. Recently changed showerheads have very low water pressure and the water is either scorching hot or freezing cold, nothing in between. Hair dryers in ladies changing room either broken or removed. There’s only few towel hangers, some lockers inside are truly disgusting, no benches to leave your bag while you shower and nobody thought to install some shampoo holders by showers, so you have to keep everything on the floor. As for the swimming area itself, the pool is big and deep, good for doing the lengths. They removed tables and benches recently so it doesn’t look very inviting and the floor tiles again need a proper scrub. My main issue there is that there’s lots of debris floating in the water, the foamy bits from the equipment and I’ve never seen any staff trying to fish it out. I even saw a plaster floating there once!
On the plus side the staff are very friendly and helpful and the car park is spacious, so 2 * for this.

The showers have recently been refurbished, the water is cold in the showers. It goes a little bit like warm then cold again. The layout of the showers mean that everyone gets wet as you walk through.
I take my kids to lessons here and you cannot sit to watch your own children swim. Any child over 3 means as a parent you are summoned to sit in the cafe and wait during the lesson.
The kids get certificates for achievements which cost £3.70 a blank print. The swimming teachers issue certificates for all sorts to incentives the add on purchase so something additional to consider.
The gym is recently refurbished too and that is a good gym. A little on the pricey side at around £38 per month but overall gym wise and classes seem to be good.
Hygiene of the swimming is as expected of public pools.
Coffee prices are about £3-£4 which again is priced to monopolise the fact that you can’t get a hot drink anywhere else nearby.
Cappuccino is nice but not worth it compared to the price and what you would pay at a high street coffee shop.

Overall, I bring my kids here to swim as it’s local and works for my schedule but some improvements needed.

If I could give it zero stars I would.
The swimming teachers are friendly.
The dinning area is grotty tables are sticky and food in all the edges of the table. It’s vile.
The pool is ok.
The changing rooms should come with a health warning. Smelling strongly of urine, I have seen used dirty nappy’s in changing rooms. Often mucky water puddles from either shoes or actually the floors being filthy I don’t think they’ve seen a mop in a few decades.
Showers only 6 work and are freezing.
I do get its in need of updating but some proper cleaning wouldn’t go a miss. I made endless complaints.

What is actually the point of having a phone service if no one answers? I’ve been trying to contact you guys for 3 days consecutively multiple times throughout the day and NOTHING. Not even a call back after I’ve left a voice mail. Clearly there’s a very poor chain of command across the leisure centre or your phone line is faulty? Whatever it is. Look into it-all I wanted to do was enquire about student membership prices.

My mother and I had a fantastic time here at the baths today. We dropped in to see what we could due to it being in the National Trust handbook. The administrator was so lovely and very kindly shown us around giving us lots of very interesting and informative information about the baths. Thank you very much! There are lots of photos of the baths and also information boards too. There are also official tours available so we hope to pop back. The architecture is wonderful and there are so many original features to look at. I would recommend popping in to see it.

The only grade II listed pool in the whole West Midlands?

This is a fantastic place to go back in time and celebrate one of the most historic buildings and classic architecture in Birmingham. Just less than 5-7 minutes drive from central Birmingham on a good traffic day, this pool is located on Alcester Road with good bus links or a Uber ride away.

The pool has changing rooms, toilets and showers all around it allowing you to be comfortable and staying in the same space.

The staff are super friendly and amazing. This week as I have been told is the last week before the big refurb and the Moseley Baths will be closed until Spring 2025.

Definitely a must visit if you are visiting Birmingham and I am most definitely looking forward to visit Birmingham once it is open again.

Visited these baths for a dip during my stay at Moseley.

It’s in urgent need of TLC. I felt like I was back in time, Victorian era to be precise. The cleanliness was non existent as it was icky and sticky. No showers before nor after which added to the 3rd world feel.

The private cubicles were the best thing about it. I wouldn’t say shut this place down, just burn it to the ground and from the watery ashes, build a better swimming bath.

My child has been on one stage for about 9 months. They introduced a new system a while ago for updating and tracking progress but it doesn’t get updated unless you speak up. When you do, they tell you that it’s the system’s fault. The last update done was about 2 months ago.

This is not the first or second time this has happened. I am on the waiting list of another swimming centre. Once there’s an opening, I will leave them.

Awful for four year olds.

Booked our four year old daughter in for 4 x 30 minute Stage 1 sessions over the school holidays. She was in a class with a 7 and 9 year. The coach had no patience for our daughter who had only previously done lessons when with a parent in the water and was used to being held up. An extremely disappointing experience and not one I’d wish on other parents / children. There was no effort to find alternative approaches or build confidence. That bad, we didn’t want to finish with the last of the sessions and not someone who should be coaching young children.

Great swimming instructors but incompetent manager who doesn’t take his job seriously. Took our kids to their first swimming lessons then we were told the manager booked the wrong lessons. Lessons are mostly fully booked and they don’t do a waiting list. Existing kids don’t get the priority to be informed of when spaces become available. Spaces open up to anyone who pay in advance and they normally get filled up quite quickly. When our kids were ready to progress to next stage, we had to keep asking almost every week to check the availability of lessons. When eventually there was availability, the manager again booked the wrong stage! Parents have to re-enrol children every term and we were not fully informed when re-enrolment was due. The notice up at the front desk with the weeks for re-enrolment were no good for parents going through the back of the pool. Lack of communication from the management team caused a lot of hassles unless parents keep things on top. The pool needs refurbishment and more shower facilities.

After 12 months our boy has transformed from being scared to swim without armbands to swimming confidently without any additional floats front and back! And is now learning breastroke! We are so proud and happy on how well he is progressing! Thanks to Graham and the rest of the team!

Children were low in confidence after starting swimming lessons following the pandemic. We also decided to change lessons to the Morris Centre and it was the best decision we made. Children have improved so much under the instruction of swimming teacher Karen who is excellent and gets the best out of the kids whilst having fun at the same time! Karen’s one to one lessons also proved invaluable and was a great confidence booster before taking kids abroad on holiday. Would highly recommend swimming lessons at the Morris Centre Club.

Really cheap place to play squash. You can become a squash member for £6 a month and then only pay £3 for court rental or just go without membership and its £3 for courts and £3.50 per person. Courts are easily to book as well. Generally OK courts. Has a changing room and showers. Has gym membership for £20 a month but the gym is small with not much inside. Staff are always friendly.

Katalina is an absolute dream of a swimming instructor! I’m so glad that I took the plunge and started lessons with her. Once you start, you understand why she’s pretty much fully booked out – she’s so clear with her teaching and has an absolutely lovely vibe! Have loved my lessons so far and can’t wait to continue learning

Amazing experience with Second Nature Swimming! Luke has been an incredible instructor- very kind, patient and a great teacher! I had 1-1 lessons which were very well structured with step-by-step techniques to learn different swimming strokes. My biggest fear was deep water and in my third lesson Luke helped me achieve my first open water swim! Still can’t believe it, but it wouldn’t have been possible without Luke’s help and encouragement. I would highly recommend these lessons as they are really tailored to your own needs, so you can progress much faster! Thanks again for everything Luke!

This review is of the company and not my swimming instructor. The instructor was very good. Through ill health, I required to cancel two future lessons, prepaid. I asked for a refund and was told, this is not possible. I could gift them to someone else or reschedule, I stated that this would not be possible. My condition is progressive, so my health will not improve. What is the probability that you know someone else wanting swimming lessons? I stated that they were leaving me with no option but to lose, roughly £160. Post the company’s review response, I understand and accept Katalina’s response. A reminder to all, please read a companies terms and conditions pre signing up for a service from any company. Best of luck Katalina. I wish, I had knew my health would deteriorate ahead of time

My experience at Second Nature swimming has been brilliant from the very start. Luke is an excellent instructor who took me from being a mature adult who was a lifetime non swimmer to swimming unaided within our first lesson! The patience and reassurance that Luke provides has enabled me to feel comfortable to develop my swimming ability without any fear or doubt. I can wholeheartedly recommend Luke to anybody who needs swimming lessons as I have previously tried swimming lessons elsewhere but these sessions at SNS literally blow them out of the water!

We had 1v2 lessons with Katalina, two girls are in different levels, but she handle it very well! Both girls likes her lessons, my daughter had no previous lessons, and was scare of water. I don’t know what magic Katalina has, my daughter was happily swim with armband and support herself for the first time! She is no longer afraid of water. For me it was a really good start! Really looking forward to future lessons if we can book more.

Just had my first lesson and to say I was extremely nervous and sceptical as I had tried many places to try and help me gain confidence in the water and learn to swim. I’m glad to say that 15 minutes into my lesson
I felt more confident in the water than I’ve felt in years. Katalina my instructor was very calm and patient with me. I’m looking forward to my next lesson and ultimately learning to swim. Thanks in advance Second Nature Swimming.

We have been using Second Nature and can honestly say that the improvement in the swimming ability of our children is remarkable. Our instructor, Katalina, is wonderful in engaging the children, initially making sure they were confident and safe in the water before moving on to teach them the usual swimming strokes. Being safe in the water in a short space of time allowed our children to have the best holiday yet as they were able to move about in the water independently and gave us the peace of mind that swimming accidents would be reduced so more relaxing all round. All in all, well worth the investment.

Beeches Pool & Fitness Centre seems to have significant challenges with customer service and staff training. Based on feedback, a recurring issue appears to be inaccurate information provided, leading to wasted time and frustration for patrons. Ensuring accurate scheduling and reliable communication is crucial for improving the overall experience.

While positive interactions are mentioned, they are overshadowed by numerous reports of unprofessional behavior and a lack of consistent service quality. Addressing the negative experiences and implementing strategies to enhance staff accountability would be vital for restoring trust and attracting members seeking a welcoming and efficient fitness environment.

Hello, my name is isac I’m a 6 year old boy and just 2 days ago I went to this pool with my friend Deako, you can see he also left a review of 1 star. The service there is horrible also the staff and the customers are rude and framing me and my friend for apparently swearing and stuff. Me and my friend never sweared we was just having fun and then a chopped staff member told us we need to leave. And we left I said to him I’d leave a 1 star review he laughed at me and said I’m gay. Please fire him, thanks.

Really bad service. I called at 4pm on Monday to inquire about swimming times and I spoke to jack. He confirmed to me to come after 7:15pm as swimming started at 7:30. I was waiting for 7:15 got these and he told me that swimming was 6:30-7:30 and that it was full and I’m too late. It seems like he deliberately told me to come when swimming was finished to waste my time.

I wasted 2 hours waiting from 4pm when I could have came earlier. Jack is not helpful at all, doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing and is just incompetent. Really poor service.

Luckily his female college stepped in and told me to book and helped me a lot more than jack so thank you. Otherwise would never have come back.

Come here to swim and use the gym with the student deal, decent facilities and a good pool. My only complaint is the lack of cubicle showers and that there are no hairdryers which leaves me having to go home with wet hair.

Machine always broken, the only good thing about that place is the receptionist, usually very lovely.
The times aren’t often updated, machines very limited, and not enough space to actually do a 30 min training with a large group, thankfully because they all know each other they still have a go regardless, there’s so much that has to be improved in that place, also the steam room seems to be working 50% of the time, the other 50% there’s just warmed air with a little bit of fragrance..

I recently took joint swimming lessons with a friend from Beau, and the experience was outstanding. Her instructions were always clear, which made it easy to understand and improve our technique. Beau is incredibly patient and friendly, which helped us feel comfortable and confident in the water. Thanks to her guidance, both of us saw noticeable improvement in our swimming and overall confidence. I highly recommend Beau to anyone looking to learn or refine their swimming skills!

Our six year old daughter has been a bit behind with her swimming skills compared to her peers and it made her a little bit self conscious and also made us worried whenever we were around water so we started booking her one to one swimming lessons with Holly-Eva and she pretty much learnt to swim independently after less then ten lessons. We are very pleased about the progress she has made and our minds are at ease knowing she is safer in water.

Me and my son have had lessons from Beth and we have found them to be a high standard. We look forward every week to our lessons her friendly manner makes it a joy to be taught by her. My son has come on in his swimming and feeling comfortable in the water and that is a credit to her as the previous swimming instructor he had, he was very happy when he left. Beth has this calming way of delivering our lessons, I have also come a long way in my confidence in the water and it’s down to how she coaches me. Over all she is pleasent, amenable, flexible approachable and always has a smile. In my sons words “she is a diamond”

What are the different types of swimming classes offered in Birmingham?

Birmingham offers a wide variety of swimming classes, catering to all ages and abilities. These include beginner lessons for those who are new to the water, advanced lessons for those looking to improve their technique, and specialized classes like baby and toddler swimming, adult-only sessions, and stroke-specific training. It’s common to find programs focusing on specific strokes such as freestyle, breaststroke, and butterfly.

How do I find reputable swimming instructors in Birmingham?

Finding reputable swimming instructors requires careful research. Start by checking online reviews and testimonials from previous students. Look for instructors who are certified by recognized organizations like the Royal Life Saving Society or the Swim England. Consider asking for recommendations from friends, family, or local community groups. It's also beneficial to check if the instructors have background checks and appropriate insurance.

What is the typical cost of swimming lessons in Birmingham?

The cost of swimming lessons in Birmingham varies depending on factors such as the instructor’s experience, the lesson format (group or private), and the duration of the program. Group lessons are typically more affordable, while private lessons offer more personalized attention but come at a higher price. Expect to pay anywhere from £15 to £40+ per lesson, with options for block bookings that often provide a discount.

Are there swimming classes available for babies and young children?

Yes, many swimming schools in Birmingham offer swimming classes specifically designed for babies and young children. These classes often focus on water familiarization, basic water safety skills, and building confidence in the water. It’s important to choose a program that follows safe practices and employs instructors trained in working with young children. A parent or caregiver typically attends these lessons.

What should I expect in a beginner swimming class?

A beginner swimming class typically focuses on foundational skills like entering and exiting the pool safely, blowing bubbles, floating, and basic kicking and arm movements. The emphasis is on water comfort and building confidence rather than mastering advanced strokes. Expect a supportive and encouraging environment with step-by-step instructions.

Do I need my own swimwear and equipment?

Generally, you will need your own swimwear, including a swimsuit, goggles, and a swimming cap (especially for longer hair). Some classes may provide equipment like floats or kickboards, but it's always a good idea to have your own for hygiene and comfort. Comfortable towel and appropriate footwear for the pool area are also essential.

What age groups are the swimming classes designed for?

Swimming classes in Birmingham are designed for a very broad range of age groups. Programs exist for babies as young as six months, children of all ages, teenagers, and adults. Most facilities will have tiered classes designed to accommodate different skill levels within each age bracket, from absolute beginners to more advanced swimmers.

What are the benefits of learning to swim?

Learning to swim provides numerous benefits. It's a vital life skill that enhances water safety, promotes physical fitness, improves cardiovascular health, and builds confidence. Swimming also provides a fun and accessible form of exercise suitable for all ages and abilities. It's a great way to improve coordination and overall well-being.

How often should I attend swimming lessons to see improvement?

The frequency of swimming lessons needed to see improvement varies depending on the individual's ability and goals. Attending lessons once a week is a good starting point for beginners. More frequent lessons, such as twice a week, can accelerate progress. Consistency is key – regular practice outside of lessons also contributes to skill development.

What should I do if I’m nervous about taking swimming lessons?

It’s perfectly normal to feel nervous about taking swimming lessons, especially if you’re a beginner or have had a negative experience in the water before. Communicate your concerns with the instructor beforehand. Choose a class with a small group size or consider a private lesson to build confidence at your own pace. Remember that everyone learns at different speeds, and the instructor’s role is to create a safe and supportive environment.
