I’ve done a few escape rooms before, so I was really excited to see Escape Hunt right next to the hotel I was staying at.

I stopped by late in the evening, and the only game available was Excalibur, which Keith recommended. I’m glad he did…it was exciting, entertaining, and perfectly mind challenging.

Keith was fantastic throughout. He was professional, friendly, engaging, and his hints were spot on (sorry Keith for ringing the bell so many times!). He honestly made the whole experience even better.

If I could, I’d give this place 10 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended, and I’ll definitely be back to try the other rooms!

We visited the Birmingham branch to try the Aladdin-themed escape room, and it did not disappoint! Our group of five, which included two children aged 10 and 12, had a brilliant time. The room was just the right level of challenging—engaging and thought-provoking, without being impossible. Our kids had a blast, and loved it. A shout-out to Jaycee, who really went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. His enthusiasm and fun nature made the experience even more enjoyable, and we couldn’t have asked for a better host. Highly recommend!

Not the first time we’ve visited, done all the rooms now apart from two of the new ones, Jamie got us all sorted and booked for an hour of mind games and Sanchez served us with a few drinks, every staff member I’ve come across at the location have been INCREDIBLE from start to finish. Sanchez guided us to our room and explained the back story for it, they’re just amazing at their job .. they get you really into the whole theme of the room you are about to enter, the help you get when your in the room is brilliant too because they really take their roles seriously! Always a pleasure to visit this location the staff is top tier! See you guys soon to try out Dracula ‍♀️ always a laugh when visiting here!

Fantastic experience. Probably two of most inexperienced escapees but still had a blast. We would recommend the The Eye of the Sun God as it’s one of the easier rooms! Big shout out to Jay and Keith – two fantastic hosts that really immerse you in the experience! Couldn’t have made our impromptu date night any better!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We did the Fun House escape room at Exciting Games Birmingham and had such an amazing experience! From the start, the lady who looked after us was absolutely brilliant – so friendly, thorough, and explained everything really well. She gave us just the right amount of help when we asked, and was such a pleasant host throughout.

The game itself was so much fun – clever puzzles, great atmosphere, and it kept us thinking right until the end. The location is also super convenient, only about a 4-minute walk from the train station.

We had such a fantastic time and will definitely be back to try another room! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun day out in Birmingham.

We had an amazing time in Room 13! Stuart was very friendly and roleplayed excellently while we were in the room, it really added to the experience. The room was very atmospheric and the puzzles were fun but challenging. We didn’t quite finish but Stuart explained the remaining parts of the room which was fascinating. Great experience!

AMAZING!!! ABSOLUTELY LOVED OUR TWO SESSIONS (Avarax and Outbreak)

Host was excellent – welcoming and friendly. The game space was massive (so much bigger than any other vr space I’ve been to)

Loved Avarax. It was so much fun – and an absolute must of you are a fan of 40k. OUTBREAK WAS *INCREDIBLE*. Very atmospheric and physical.

If you like VR, DO IT. I have a quest 3, and this blew me away by comparison

EDIT – Only potential improvement would have been to have food available on-site. We might have stayed and done one more experience, but had to leave for lunch.

Awesome experience! The most fun the 4 of us have had together in a long time. 30 mins is more than enough to get the experience. We were allowed to do two different games which helped too. We were sweating buckets by the end of it. So be aware to bring a towel. The parking isn’t clear but if you go direct to the venue you can park outside it for free!

Blew my mind the free space vr, super fun. Definitely a worth while experience and it’s going to be cool to see where the tech goes. Nice play with nice staff who are super chilled but on the ball. We played the Far cry vr, which was cool, but looks like the zombie ones are a better option.

It is a great space and the idea is great. We had technical issues that did damage the immersion but the staff were friendly and gave us extra time to make up for it.

The staff were great, the technology when working was great fun but we were unlucky that it kept having streaming issues. I will do this again on the assumption that the technical problems won’t happen again. If I go again and there are no issues then I will update this review and give them 5 stars.

Borja Ferrater Caro

Clue HQ Birmingham used to have the best escape rooms in town. Phenomenal puzzles, challenging and with top immersive components.

Unfortunately, not anymore. The escape rooms now have been scrapped to the bare minimum to raise the percentage of escapes, targeting a younger, more inexperienced audience.

We did the Captain Riddle, that used to be a race to sail a boat to a cursed island, to get into a cave that had a real waterfall. And when you completed the room, four treasure chests hanging from the top of the waterfall opened, letting drop tons of coins like a real treasure. Real, old coins. You then had one minute to take as much gold as you could back to the ship. Your score was not only the time taken to complete the room, but also the weight of the treasure taken.

However, today that cave doesn’t exist anymore. The lack of care of the room, according to the host, caused the wood under the waterfall to rot. So unfortunately the room was cut short, and the ending doesn’t even make sense. We didn’t even realised that we had finished.

It is such a shame that this place, that used to be higher tier, has gone so low only because of lack of care for their rooms. Also, they used to have a great board game cafe on the entrance, that has also closed.

Was hoping to do a game last minute which I understand isn’t always possible but thought I’d pop in and ask anyway.
The guy inside told me that everything has to be done online (which is strange as no other escape room has ever done this) and rudely told me to just go online and book for tomorrow instead.

No help was offered and overall really poor customer service.

Had a fantastic time thank you! Nicko our game master was great and had a really good laugh with us. We just about escaped the Temple raider (think that was the name), plenty of clues were given when asked and Nicko helped count us down at the end so we escaped by the skin of our teeth. Brilliant experience, highly recommended. We loved the rooms and how transitions between the rooms worked.

All I can say is amazing!!! So enjoyable we went as a group of three. Personally not having done one before I was so hesitant, but this was so enjoyable and I’ll definitely be going back to do another one. We actually escaped which was a bonus! But it couldn’t have been made possible if it wasn’t for the amazing host Connie!!! Her clear explanation of everything! Her aura was second to none! Made us feel so comfortable. She is an amazing asset to the team, and she is one of the reasons we will be going back to do the other two escape rooms. It was our first activity of the day and she really made it so enjoyable.

Difficult to find the place (no signs)… eventually discovered it was in the 10 pin bowling section. Great guy introducing the Titanic room. Disappointing that one clue was very dark so impossible to see (torch needed in this room somewhere). We were told we could have used our phone torches but they shouldn’t rely on people having phones with them (& it’s generally not allowed). Another useful thing would be to have a countdown clock somewhere in the game rooms). We’ve done many escape rooms … this one needs a bit more thought to improve it.

Houdini is an amazing escape room. The staff are wonderful too. Holly and Hannah we both exceptional hosts.
We’ve done all three rooms as a family of two adults, one 9yo and one 12yo. All three were doable as a family. Temple escape was the best, but also the hardest and perhaps a little on the frightening side for a 9yo.
Hexmore worked great for the 9yo and his friends from school as a bday party.
Titanic was also great fun.

Thanks Team Houdini

I had wanted to do the Titanic game for a while, and it lived up to my expectations. Great theming and a good variety of puzzles. Although our games master said at the start we could have as little or as much help as we wanted, I feel he guided us quite a lot towards the end when we hadn’t asked for it which I think is why our finish time was quite quick at 37 minutes 38 seconds. Despite this, it was still an enjoyable experience and different to a lot of other games I’ve previously played. At the end, we were each given an anchor charm bracelet, which allows us to gain 10% off our next in-person booking, a nice little touch.

My daughter and I booked The Mystic’s Cabin. We’ve both been to a few escape rooms before and this was just the right challenge level for us. Some were very clever. Lee provided enough help when we needed it and we got out with less than a minute to spare. The venue was nice and the room was well maintained (some I’ve been to have been quite tired looking). I loved the fact that this was an independent company and would definitely go again to try another room if I’m in Birmingham.

Disappointing Experience After a Great First Visit

We were really looking forward to our return visit after having such a positive experience the first time, but unfortunately this visit fell short.

In the first room, the clue that was supposed to be out in the open to support to unlock the box was actually locked inside the said box, which made progressing impossible. Despite repeatedly explaining this to the team member, they kept telling us it was on the table next to the bed, but it simply wasn’t there. After wasting a significant amount of time, we finally managed to unlock the box and found the missing clue inside.

In the next room, we correctly solved a puzzle that should have triggered a door to open, but the staff didn’t notice. Again, we were stuck and unable to move forward until we called for help.

The hints provided weren’t particularly useful, and it felt like the staff weren’t really listening to what we were trying to explain, as shown in the first room.

Overall, we left feeling disappointed, which was a real shame given how impressed we’d been after our first visit.

Played the holy grail with my friends, the only complaint is that the room can get a bit hot but I’d imagine that’s only an issue in the summertime.

Aathira was very friendly and took this lovely picture for us!

Did the Magic Spell room, left disappointed. Other reviews seem to echo this, not much of a challenge, open props lying around. Not much of a storyline. Went through the puzzles fairly quickly thinking there would be another room with something more challenging but then it ended. Have done a fair few escape rooms & this was probably the most disappointing one.

We did ” quest for the grail “.

I am very disappointed for :

– lack of introduction. The game master only said that we need to look for an item then we enter the room. Usually game masters role play and give some fun context for the room….
– the puzzles were extremely bad. Some discolored elements (white instead of orange) + strange color matching puzzles in a room were the light is dim has caused lots of misunderstanding despite having understood the puzzles. The game master took long time to give clues and clues were always useless (it seems she was not following what we were doing really)

This has to be the worst escape game I did ever…

We had a great time escaping the Mayan temple. It’s always refreshing when an escape room is about puzzles and not padlocks. A good variety of puzzles for our group to work on both separately and together.

Ebony was fabulous and we will come back to try harder rooms.

4 instead of 5 star because we think one of the puzzles wasn’t working properly.

What an amazing experience. As soon as we entered the building the staff were so friendly and welcoming. Our game master Luke was nothing short of amazing! He was so kind and encouraging and all round nice guy. The Holy Grail room was fun, exciting, challenging and fully immersive, suitable for all ages and groups! We cannot wait to return to Grand Escape again and try many of the other amazing rooms they have on offer!!

Was booked in for survival with my friends. When we got there, there was no one. We waited a bit before asking other people in the building if they knew where the escape room staff were. They told us that they were there yesterday and they had issues and are a scam. They have taken their phone numbers off the internet and is labelled as “temporarily closed” but they didnt think to call us and let us know that our session is cancelled. I am unable to contact them since their number is off the internet and they dont have an email address. I would like a refund since me and my friends paid £72!!! I sincerely would like everyone who wants to book this escape room in the future to reconsider. Ive read many low star reviews thinking that it wouldnt happen to us but it did!!! SCAMM!!!! Would rate a -10 if i could!

Room 404 was a huge disappointment. I bought tickets through Groupon and was really excited to try out their VR escape room experience with my friends. Their website clearly stated that no booking was required and we could just walk in. When we arrived, the building was open, but completely empty—no staff, no customers, and no signs explaining what was going on. There was nothing to indicate they were closed, which made the whole situation frustrating. We left feeling let down after having been so excited. Now it looks like they may be out of business, as Google lists them as temporarily closed.

This was an amazing experience, really frightening but definitely not for the faint hearted. We managed to escape just about with 8 minutes to spare. Game host James was very helpful with all the clues and the NPC which I hated whilst in there was actually very cool.

Frequently Asked Questions about Escape Rooms in Birmingham

What exactly is an escape room?

An escape room is a team-based activity where a group of people are ‘locked’ in a themed room and must use logic, clues, and problem-solving skills to escape within a specific time limit. Rooms are designed with intricate puzzles, hidden objects, and engaging narratives that require collaboration and communication to solve.

How many people are typically needed for an escape room?

Most escape rooms have a recommended group size, usually ranging from 2 to 6 players. Some rooms can accommodate larger groups, but it’s often best to have a smaller team for optimal problem-solving and engagement. Too many players can make it difficult to participate and contribute effectively. Check the room's specific requirements on the website.

What age is appropriate for escape rooms?

While there's no strict age limit, escape rooms generally require a certain level of cognitive ability and problem-solving skills. Most rooms recommend ages 12 and up, although younger children may be able to participate with adult supervision. Some rooms offer specific family-friendly themes designed for younger audiences. Always check the room's difficulty rating and recommended age before booking.

Do I need any special skills to participate?

You don't need any specific technical skills to enjoy an escape room. The focus is on teamwork, communication, and observation. While a background in puzzles or riddles might be helpful, it's not essential. The most important qualities are a positive attitude, a willingness to collaborate, and a desire to have fun.

What happens if we get stuck or run out of time?

If your team gets stuck, most escape room operators provide clues or hints to help you get back on track. These are usually available through a monitor or a designated communication system. If you run out of time, you don't "lose" – it’s simply part of the experience. You can still discuss the puzzles and celebrate your efforts.

What are the different themes offered by escape rooms in Birmingham?

Escape rooms in Birmingham offer a wide variety of themes, catering to different interests and preferences. You can find rooms based on historical events, fantasy worlds, horror stories, science fiction, and even popular movies and television shows. Research the room descriptions to find a theme that appeals to your group.

What’s the best way to prepare for an escape room experience?

While extensive preparation isn't necessary, a few simple steps can enhance your experience. Review the room’s description to understand the theme and difficulty level. Encourage team members to communicate effectively and assign roles if desired. And most importantly, bring a positive and enthusiastic attitude!

How much do escape rooms typically cost?

The cost of an escape room varies depending on the room’s complexity, duration, and location. Generally, you can expect to pay around £20-£35 per person. Some rooms offer discounts for larger groups or special promotions, so be sure to check the venue’s website for current pricing.

What should I wear to an escape room?

There are generally no strict dress code requirements for escape rooms. However, it’s recommended to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes, as you may need to crawl, climb, or bend over to search for clues. Avoid wearing anything too valuable or delicate, as it could get damaged during the experience.

Are there any safety precautions I should be aware of?

Most escape room venues prioritize safety and implement various precautions. You should be aware of your surroundings and follow any instructions provided by the staff. Let the staff know if you have any medical conditions or concerns before starting the game. There is usually an easy emergency exit available at all times.
